Some more views of the Exercise Olympic Guardian detachment at RAF Northolt, May 2012. Many thanks to RAF Northolt and the aircrew for providing an entertaining visit for us local residents who had to “endure” the noise (!!!). Not a problem….

“The UK Government has indicated that airspace restrictions will be placed around all Games venues. The major restrictions will be centred on London and the Olympic Park and will run from 14 July 2012 to 15 August 2012. A smaller set of airspace restrictions will then be put in place for the London 2012 Paralympic Games from 16 August 2012 to 12 September 2012.”

There will be a large area of restricted airspace centered on London in which any flying will be strictly controlled and must be pre-authorised. The Typhoons will be acting as QRA aircraft and will not be flying standing patrols. I imagine they’ll return to Northolt to get settled in a week or two before 14/7.

Aah, I see. Wonder when the detachment proper starts.

Well, they were only at Northolt for 5 days to practise procedures, so not armed to the teeth!
The excavations seen on the grass in the cockpit shot are for installation of a concrete blast wall..to deal with any accidental missile firing, I was reliably informed by the Officer I/C of the detachment.

That has to be a display kite, surely they’re not going up with just one ASRAAM? Nice shots though, thanks.

you will notice the silence when they are gone. i used to love watching the Tornado`s taking off at night when i was at Coningsby, they made a hellava racket but the twin afterburners stabbing the dark looked fantastic.
