MOSAIC Corvette Design

Orrizonte Sistemi Navali displayed this “modular” light frigate / corvette concept called MOSAIC (Modular Open System Architecture Integrated Concept or something like that) in DSA 2008, Kuala Lumpur.

There are mainly two versions: MOSAIC 2.0 and MOSAIC 2.4, having 2,000t and 2,400t displacement respectively.

MOSAIC 2.0 has CODAD with 29+kt speed and 2.4 has CODAG with 30+kt speed arrangement. Both have hull with 100m length and 13.90m beam with capability to carry 5+t ASW/ASuW helicopter (AB-212ASW was displayed on the model).

According to mission systems, there are two versions: “Missile corvette” and “multi-role corvette”.

Missile corvette has 76mm/62 Oto Melara Super Rapid gun, 2 x 4 SSM, 8 x Mk48 VLS + ESSM, 2 x 30mm Oto Melara remote controlled turret each having 6 Igla SAM’s, 1 x 30mm Goalkeper CIWS, 533mm TT.

Multi-role corvette has 76mm/62 Oto Melara Super Rapid gun, 2×4 SSM, 2 x 8 VL-Mica, 2 x Oto Melara 30mm remote controlled turret, 533mm TT.

I apologize if I have offended South Korean sensitivities. Now, lets get back to the Mosaic corvette design.

Who’s being sensitive now? No need for the smarts.

In the west and other parts of the world yes, possibly because the name of the ship was bit difficult. I’m just saying that Okpo was never a Korean designation as far as I know. All the press releases I’ve looked at from 1996 mentions the ship by name, not by the yard name. I know the name Okpo have flooded back into Korean media and military communities from English-speaking sources however.

Just as a sidenote, Okpo is the name of the yard. It’s neither the project name or the shipname.

I enlarged the model image and they may be Mk 48. Like on KD-1 Okpo, but grouped together differently (per group: 4 missiles facing together, 4 exhausts left and 4 right of those missiles. 4 such groups forward of the bridge). Wonder if a Mk41 tactital module would not offer advantages over this Mk48 set up.

They should offer it with only VLS missiles and remove the 2×4 SSM launcher. As far as the CIWS, remember that the 76mm Oto Melara has a very effective CIWS capability with the new guided DART round.

At first glance I also thought the same, but the project manager said they were Mk48.

Looks to me like the missile corvette has 4 single Mk41 cells forward of the bridge, which would imply another 2 are on each side of the Goalkeeper, making for a total of 8 cells and a loadout of 32 ESSM.

Hi,
At least the model doesn´t show a Goalkeeper, does it. Besides the 30mm Oto Melara remote controlled turrets are no real CIWS but rather secondary ASuW guns.

Actually they look more like MM-40 launchers to me. See the inclination?

Na, there’s definitely a Goalkeeper on the missile corvette version. Not on the multipurpose version though: that only has 2 single 30mm cannon on the beams

Yep, they look like MM40 more than Harpoon launchers

Those Harpoon launch tubes.
Wonder how many people will go for the Exocet MM40 Block III, the first Western AShM suiteable for vertical launch systems. Only with the upcoming Harpoon Block III the U.S. will also have VLS capable AShM. Shows that competition is a good thing.

About time……wonder what launchers they’d be compatible with?

Hi,

Any ideas on the radar used by missile corvette version bit unusual it has 30 mm oto as well a goalkeeper.

At least the model doesn´t show a Goalkeeper, does it. Besides the 30mm Oto Melara remote controlled turrets are no real CIWS but rather secondary ASuW guns.

The radar is supposed to be called “Kronos”. It is a light version of Empar currently under development by Selex SI.

The project MOSAIC is largely based on OPV Cigala Fulgosi / NUMC in service with Italian Navy.

For helicopter capability on site orizzontesn.it (en + eng) is specified as follows:
2.0: Flight deck and fixed hangar for 1 Helicopter (up to 5 t)
2.4: Flight deck and fixed hangar for 1 Helicopter (up to 10 t)

The flight deck is NH-90 compatible at 99% for both. NUMC have the telescopic hangar
