Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI)

During a recent visit to Moscow – and Gelendzhik for the Hydroaviation Salon – we were shown around the Moscow Aviation Institute in Moscow:- http://www.mai.ru/english/ .

Although we had been told by some knowledgeable Russians that the place was top secret, and that we would not be allowed to take photos, we were allowed to photograph what we liked.

The stuff on display in the structures faculty was just amazing – with a fully sectioned MiG-23 with working undercarrriage, folding fin and wings as well as sectioned examples of the Yak-38, Su-25, Su-27 & MiG-29.

There were lots of wing sections on display as well as undercarriage assemblies and components – even parts from the RSR.

Amongst the things of interest were a Northrop F-5 and F-111 escape module – from Vietnam, the fin from Capt Scott O’Grady’s F-16 from Serbia, an experimental tracked undercarriage from an Il-28, the tailwheel of a Mosquito, wing sections from the first Su-9, P-63, Phantom etc.

There was even a one-man pod designed to be carried by the Su-25 and the Kvant aerobatic single-seater designed by the students

The place was a mecca for an aviation enthusiast – I took dozens of photos – this is just a small selection……

PS – I did go a bit overboard on the sectioned Su-27 😮
