Mosquito Accident May 19-1945

Where can I find details of the above, It was a fatal accident, the Pilot being Wing Commander A.S.Dredge,DFC.DSO. He was a family friend, his funeral the first I ever attended. Some myths arose about his final flight, but I have now established the date & aircraft, but not where nor the circumstances.
Any information would be appreciated.

Wing Co. A.S.Dredge

Hello Chris,
Thanks for the info, apologies for the delay, I have been off line for 48 hours, due to a phone line (BT) fault which up here in the Highlands takes some little time to correct.
I had not checked the CWWG site but I have now, see my other reply, I will now be plesed to put the correct info. into the domain of the Battle of Britain web site.

Wing Co. A.S.Dredge.

Thank you Paul McMillan & Lauriebe, the family “myth” mentioned was that Alan Dredge was killed in a Meteor performing a barrel roll at a low height, but I had never seen any written confirmation until just recently when: on the Battle of Britain Association web site it stated that he was killed in a Mosquito!! Hence my query, you have restored my faith in the Family Myth.
Thanks again.

Welcome to the forum, Craggan.

As mentioned by Paul in the previous post, Wg Cdr Dredge was demonstrating Meteor III, EE238 of 1335 CU, at Farnborough on 18 May 1945, when the accident occured.

The details listed in Colin Cummings’ ‘Price of Peace’ read:

“The pilot was carrying out a demonstration of the aircraft and entered a barrel roll at 400 knots and a height of under 200 feet. The aircraft lost height in the roll, struck the ground and burst into flames. It was commented that this pilot had undertaken similar manouvres on two previous occasions and each time had lost significant height. Wg Cdr Dredge received his DSO whilst commanding 3 Sqn and the citation comments on his inspiring leadership, great courage and determination.”

The Mosquito could be a pig to get out of in a wheels-up landing.

There’s a very harrowing description in Dave McIntosh’s book, ‘Terror in the Starboard Seat’ of a similar incident

Hello Craggan,

Have you seen the entry on the C.W.G.C. site for W/C Dregde.

http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=2714360

It’s been a few hours without a reply so try posting your inquiry on the following site. You should get a response quite quickly.
