Great news. One step closer to two flying Mosquitos

Lucky you – hopefully they get bored doing circuits over Victoria and start heading up my way soon. Glad to hear they finally have the gear issues dealt with.

It makes me furious when I see the Mosquito. I turn green and yellow with envy. The British, who can afford aluminum better than we can, knock together a beautiful wooden aircraft that every piano factory over there is building, and they give it a speed which they have now increased yet again. What do you make of that? There is nothing the British do not have. They have the geniuses and we have the nincompoops. After the war is over I’m going to buy a British radio set – then at least I’ll own something that has always worked.
Attributed to Hermann Goering. Whether he actually did say it I’ve no idea.

LUCKY, LUCKY me, whilst waiting for the better half outside Costco in Victoria today IT flew over 3 times at around 1500-2000 feet.
Gear was up and the Merlins sounded real sweet. Glad I didn’t need anything from the store.

Prior to VR796 flying to Vancouver for storage in the future, it has to supposedly complete 5 hours of airtime before they let it into YVR airspace. Hmmmmm… Most of the flight training out of Victoria airport takes place over the east coast of Vancouver Island – up here in my neck of the woods. Maybe I’ll be in for a bit of a show these next few weeks. Some of the old vets that live around me would be tickled to watch her fly overhead. The old guy next door used to watch new Mosquitos do their flight testing out of Malton Airport in Ontario during the war. Maybe I’ll get to have my wish to see her fly after all.

That was TV959 now owned by by Paul Allen- as mentioned above
Just fabulous, made my day. Watched the short video clip, hairs on my neck stood up as the Merlins were spooled up. Well hopefully we get to see two Lancasters airborne here later this year, maybe north America and Canada will have the same with two Mosquitos.

Fantastic news

Both of them have significant Canada histories -one being recreated as such. We need to travel there I feel as we are lagging in inspiration and determination.

Yes, quite right – it is important that we remember the huge amount of work carried out on the aircraft by Don Campbell, which ultimately made the flight yesterday possible at all.

Incredibly it was the early 1970’s at Kapuskasing in Canada that Don Campbell started this project.
His family will be so proud that both his Spitfire, AR614, and his Mosquito finally made it.

Without in any way trying to detract from the marvellous achievements of the NZ based team which completed the airworthy example now in the U.S., I think that the return of Bob Jens’ example to the air is historically even more significant, as it has mostly “original” woodwork. That is what I recall from when Mr Jens showed me the aircraft some years ago when at its previous location.

I read over at WIX that it was a 15min flight and the gear was left down.
Some great photos at VAM’s Facebook page. Congratulations to all involved!
