Next month, the wreckage of Mosquito PZ174 (23Sq/100 Group) will be recovered from the place where it, together with its crew, crashed on July 21 st, 1944. Both FL Francis Leonard Grimwood and Frederic Bernard Woodman were KIA, and burried in Holland. So far we have been unsuccesfull in finding a picture of Francis Grimwood. Is a picture of him known to exhist?

Having read all of the above, I feel it’s only appropriate to inform you of the fact that on May 4th a newly designed war-memorial will be unveiled in our villlage that contains some of the parts retrieved in the dig for PZ174. You may expect a photograph on this thread around May 10th.
After visiting the excavation and seeing the debris being recovered I decided to build a replica of PZ174. I hope one of you Mosquito-enthousiasts can help me with my only problem (so far): what was PZ174’s callsign? I’ve searched the net but I can’t seem to find the answer…
Thanks for the information. Could you also give us the details of the location of the memorial?

Have you got pictures of other items recovered e.g. engines and cockpit area?

The dig for the machine is over in a few hours. A lot of debris were found, all but the wooden parts (and they aren’t even that bad) , very well preserved. BW Roger

This afternoon, I was at the site. The Dutch Airforce has already found a lot of wreckparts. Much more as was expected. So far, they have digged up to 2 mtrs. In the coming weeks, more is expected to be found.

I am going to contact you as soon as possible. My mother died, and I have a lot to do and organise, while I feel misserable.

Spoke to my neighbour last night and I can confirm he has a photograph of all 23 squadron. Francis appears on it, along with Frederic.
Interestingly he has met the crew of the other Mosquito which went on the same mission as PZ174 and was able to shed some light on what happened.
Are you the same group that was looking to recover the aircraft about 10 years ago?

It may be worth contacting the City of Norwich Aviation Museum, as they have a 100 group section.
There is also a 100 group association that may be able to help, and can be contacted through a link on the museum website. This association is made up of people who served in 100 Group, and their relatives. They often have photos from the different squadrons in the group, although I can’t personally recall seeing any from 23 squadron.

James

A neighbour of mine has a large collection of 23 squadron photographs.
I was looking at one of the albums the other day, it contained quite a few aircrew portraits.
I will ask him if he has a picture of Francis.

Have you checked The CWGC site for all his details?.
From there if it has a place his mother and father came from, a letter to a local Newspaper seeking relatives might be worth a try.
I think every source has been checked, but with no succes.

Thanks for the heads-up Roger… Please keep us posted! :):):)
Is this the one where there are 2 x 500lb. bombs still on board?
Yes, that’s the one. Thanks to some info given on this forum in an earlier post (in January), after first deciding that the wrecksite was “safe”as long as there was 50 cm ground above of the bombs, shortly afterwards (after the media was informed), they (the political “ones”) decided the Mosquito had to be salvaged.
