Greetings all,
Would anyone be able to identify the colours of the Mosquito in the attached photo.
The photo is from the Australian Military Aircraft Serials and Aircraft History.

This was taken in late 1953.
I’m back on my modeling project of the 1953 London to Christchurch Air Race.
Thanks to all.

Hi David and all,
David thanks very much for the great information.
This will allow me to finish the Titus Oates plane.
Best regards,
Don
KLG’s registration reflected its spark plug sponsorship. FB Mk40 fitted with a (non-standard) belly tank by Titus Oates. High gloss ‘dark red’ overall, white registrations, ‘sky blue’ Ampol titles outlined in white (both sides and under the starboard wing), white discs and black race numbers. Issue 4/1998 APMA magazine has drawings, still available as a back issue.

CORRECTION
Hi Ron and all.
The photo was from the ADF Serials site.
http://www.adf-serials.com/
I don’t know where they got them.
Probably passed on from your friend to Oates, who knows.
Check out the site at the above address at Mosquito A52-324.
In any case, they are super.
Best regards,
Don

I have a copy of a similar photo of VH-KLG. I obtained mine from a former Qantas employee who was stationed on Cocos Island at the time. From memory, his print was larger and I always believed that he had taken it. As evidenced by the photo itself, there were at least two photographers in attendance so the photo in question could have been taken by someone else altogether. I can’t explain the Eddie Coates attribution. I know him and he’s not like that. Whoever took it, it’s a pity he wasn’t using colour film!

This Mossie was all-over red. Pic was taken on the Cocos Islands when it staged through during (or before) the race I think. It went missing and had crashed off the coast of Burma.
Not sure about the ‘Eddie Coats’ bit on your pic. The pic below was taken by an RAF rigger who was out there on the island for the transiting Canberras. Pic is almost exactly the same as the one you show. Also, I’ve posted the page from Brian Cook’s photo album as support info. I doubt that Brian has sold his albums either as he’s dead proud of being part of the event.

By all accounts VH-KLG was red. I’ve sent you a PM.

It was a PR Mk41 that ditched off the Burma Coast. The Pr Mk41s were built in Australia. The dark colour leads me to suspect it was probably PR Blue.
But that is only surmise.
