I heard that a certain Bill Gates (Microsoft) has comissioned a Mosquito and that it was being built in the UK, put me out of my misery is it true or just another rumour?

I think Paul Allen may have other targets in sight at the moment!
Apparantly he is a man that can multi-task!

Hi Phill
I am lucky enough to have a little inside knowledge since I am on the Mossie project with Glyn Powell here in Auckland NZ.
We were contacted thru AV specs to Quote on the restoration of Paul’s T3 TV959 and it was recommended that the wing be re-built during the restoration as it had been cut just outboard of the R/H engine nacelle for display in the IWM while it was suspended from the ceiling. Rebuilding the wing would have resulted in considerable cost and it appears that a business down in the south island of NZ has quoted a cheaper price to repair the wing instead, which would be quite hard I should amagine.
The hull is apparently in good condition with only minor transit damage so the aircraft may well be restored here in NZ, only catch for Paul is there are not too many places set up to do Mossie restorations at the present time!
Thanks for the info.
I remember seeing the wing in the corner of the TFC hanger at Duxford,it was there for years! I got a glimps of the fusalarge as well before it left. I think this will be a long and costly rebuild, but if anyone can afford he can:D

I doubt Kermit Weeks Mossies is airworthy any more. as the climate, I believe will have effected the adhesive used on the wings and it hasnt flown in ages.Unless anyone knows different
Its certainly been static in the Oshkosh Museum for the ten years I have been going. There has been some debate here about the extent of any ‘damage’ that may have been caused by the Florida climate, although it certainly flew many times when it was based there. Someone who used to work for KW and was involved in the operation of the aircraft (and flew in it a couple of times) was posting on here a few months ago I recall.

Kermit’s Mossie is home. Oshkosh lumbermills supplied much of the specialized wood used in Mosquito construction. Can’t get much more “home” than that. 😀
No no no! HOME HOME mate, she’s wasted over there…………;)

Actually a lot of the timber for the Mosquitos was also grown in Britain, in a forest in the south somewhere. I forget the name of the forest. But a New Zealand Army forestry unit was stationed there felling the trees for the production.
Interesting to hear another Mosquito project is possibly coming to NZ. Cool.

Bring it on, and it’s about time Kermit sent his back home to fly again.

Wh would you need to be Bill Gates, sounds rather more like Doug Arnold….
I remember Doug had a painting in his Biggin Hill office of a trio consisting of a Spit, Hurricane, and Lancaster. All of them had the codes DW-A and there was an oval in one corner with his face painted in. From memory it looked like it was from the photo of Doug in Flypast in the early 80s. Would have been quite cool if he had had all of his flown Spits at one single time. He could have furnished more or less a full squadron all by himself!

Doug Arnold was the man who founded Warbirds of Great Britain, not a lot out there he hasn’t owned at one time. Sadly he passed away in 92.

Thanks Moggy
If I was Bill Gates I would have a fleet of RAF Wartime aircraft including at least one full squadron of every MK of Spifire, all on an original fully restored wartime airfield( would need a very large one). How much would that cost??? , maybe even Bill Gates could’nt manage that.:)
Does anyone know who is doing the restoration for Paul Allen?
Thanks
Graham

Sorry, Bill Gates hasn’t been mentioned since post 3!:D
Correct, however, 1. Ive only just noticed the thread & 2. I thought it was a thread about Bill Gates having a Mosquito. Oh well never mind, sorry folks. Bex

Lets hope its just a rumour, cant stand Gates on the best of days, this would really take the biscuit. Before I get shot down in flames, his cash would be great for the heritage aviation world. Bex
