From the Fighter Collection Flying Legends Participants list website
Quote:
12x Supermarine Spitfire
2x Boeing B-17 Flying FortressI’m happy with that.
OK, but how do I make it plural if I don’t know the exact number?
Should I put it as “Many x Fortress”?

From the DE HAVILLAND GAZETTE, April, 1946, published by de Havilland Enterprise….
Someone with more copies of the Gazette than I, might care to waste a few hours checking to see if this spelling was consistent throughout, or maybe it was just down to the individual writer’s preference?

The Mosquito taking off, with the B-17s in the background, was taken at Wyton. The Mosquito belonged to 128 Squadron.
As for spelling? Me thinks people can be a little too pedantic (not having a go at you Janie), but whatever floats your boat! The Mosquito was named after the insect, so what the heck. I shall keep spelling it Mosquitoes!

🙂 The photo of the Mossie taking off with the bomber stream flying overhead, was it taken at Bourne airfield in Cambridgeshire.?
Digging back into my memory they have built a new town called Cambourne near the old airfield and inside their Supermarket they have hung several large photos of the aircraft taken from that site.
The photo seems to strike a chord with me but not being a fan of supermarkets i havent been back to that one for several months.
Just wondered.

Well that tells you about the insect, but the whole point of my statement was that the insect is a noun and the name of an aeroplane is a proper noun which means that different rules apply.
E.g. The plural of Tesco is Tescos, not Tescoes!!

A few more Mosquitoes from the de Havilland stable!

Hi All,
Thought I’d check what the dictionary says, about Mosquito -es or -s.
Seems were all right!

Does this rule also apply to the Boeing Fortress? (Just trying to improve my English, as usual.)

Sorry, I don’t get it. What’s wrong with Griffon?
It rotates the prop in the wrong direction, to begin with…
It always begins with a capital letter. It’s a name it cannot be changed. To make a proper noun plural, you just add an ‘s’.
Does this rule also apply to the Boeing Fortress? (Just trying to improve my English, as usual.)

I think the last word on Mosquitos or Mosquitoes should rest with Geoffrey de Haviiland.
I’ll give the book a read Neilly. It was probably a typo in the book!
By the way, did he like to have his name spelt as you put it here?
😀 😀 😀
Touche!

😉 Hercules or Herculii or Herculeses, 🙂

Does the same apply to Tornado (Panavia, Hawker, or North American)?
Is it Tornados, or Tornadoes?
And while we’re on the subject, what about that faithful old helicopter the Wessex.
Is the plural Wessii? Wessexs always sounds wrong?

Hi All,
I think the last word on Mosquitos or Mosquitoes should rest with Geoffrey de Haviiland. Anyone who has read his autobiography will know, the quickest way to get the great mans wrath, was to write Mosquitos! He maintained it should be written Mosquitoes.

To make a proper noun plural, you just add an ‘s’.
One (Fairey) Swordfish; two Swordfishs… ?? 🙂

Does this mean that Lancman has to change his Forum name to PersonchesterPerson?
