Movie models

One of my favourite things to attempt is models of “film star” aircraft – planes which have appeared in films and TV shows over the years.

Here’s my collection so far!

And did they not also have the individual exhaust ejectors, rather than the covered type?

Aside from the markings, how accurate does the Lancaster represent those used in filming?
I would expect they had some non-wartime equipment or aerials since they were still active RAF aircraft?

The aircraft carried treaded tyres,
0.5 twin calibre guns in rear turret,
new ASI aerial,
larger rear canopy astro-dome
Squadron codes slightly larger than wartime sizes
and even the camouflage markings were simply Brown painted over the standard BC Grey used at the time.

The Lancasters used were brought out of storage for the filming

An aircraft from 633 Squadron film.

A B25, as used in the film to drop George into Norway . . .

I have never seen evidence of the reported statement that these aircraft carried dual markings.,
I have only ever seen G-George, P-Posie and M-Mother.

Have you done any from The Battle Of Britain or Dambusters with different markings on each side of the aircraft.

I’ve built a few of the newer 1/72 Airfix kits, and they are lovely.

All of these are new-tool kits:

This one actually started life as a normal Mk.IX! Lovely kit, though. In my opinion, an ideal beginner’s kit.

The odd one out – 1/48th Spitfire Mk.XII. Very nice!

But do you buy Airfix? Are they as good as they used to be?

I usually get them online. I don’t often get a chance to visit any model shops these days – and even then, it’s usually only Hobby Craft at Fort Kinnaird!

I didn’t know about the B-17 decals – thanks for that. Will have to look out for them.

And I do have an urge to do another Airfix Mustang….!

Daz;

I’m sure you already know, but have you seen the Kitsworld B-17 Memphis Belle movie decal sheet? Has all the movie markings on there. There is also a sheet of decals about to be released for all the Mustangs that took part in the film.

Nice collection by the way! I remember building an Angels One Five Hurricane from the Heller kit when I was 14.

Regards;
Steve

I’ve got a book on the filming of the movie, so there might be some good references there.

For the Lancaster, you could start with the basic Dambuster variant and work from that.

Do they show enough of the aircraft in the film to made an accurate model (of an inaccurate aircraft)?
IIRC, most of the scenes are done at night and I don’t recall seeing a good view of it…whether it had proper turrets, the bomb bay changes and other details.
