Yeah I have a digital video camera with 500X optical zoom. Very good for footage, but the ‘snapshots’ aren’t all that good really. i just usually use them when I’m flying cos I can record the take-off and such. This thread that I did a while ago has a loada snaphots taken off my video camera, not too good as you can see.

For actually taking pictures, you might have been better spending less and getting a dedicated camera. Quality might not be great if its a camcorder as well.

You will notice that finding a good zoom is difficult, therefore you should take pictures at the highest resolution available and then cut them out on your computer in an official picture size of course. Sometimes I use my tripod, but for approaching aircraft I take the camera off.

Digital zoom is pointless, you are better of not using it and using the optical zoom only.

When you use the digital zoom, the camera cuts out large sections of the photo and throws it away. Therefore you loose a lot of detail. If you really want to zoom in, use the optical zoom. If that is not enough you should modify the photo on the computer using paint shop pro or something similar.

you move it along with the plane. Put the shutter time as short as you can. Once you mastered shooting those planes you can make the shutter time longer and make action shots with motion blur.
