Museum find identification help please

Hi – Have had a request from a local museum to try to identify a tailwheel recently brought in – It was dug up in a local garden and had been used as a wheelbarrow wheel for a number of years!!!

The numbers on the tail wheel they have quoted are: Serial no. 193429/2 – DRG no. AHC 5048 Issue 16. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

They have also just unearthed a superb four bladed wood propeller in a basement – tied to the rafters with rope, it seems no-one spotted it and it had been there for years – forgotten, until someone looked up!!! They are trying to work out how to get it down now!!!

Er Nick – 682al is the most knowledgeable RAF specialist on the forum so I’d listen to him if I were you…

And he always beats me to the ID’s….the sod! 🙂

Hi TT – Yes I am well aware of Alan’s expertise & you are quite right his ability to id stuff is quite unnerving – I didnt really doubt him, just like a second opinion, so thought I would stir things a bit! :dev2: However I was not aware of the vestigal tailwheel on the Albermarle – that’s the beauty of this forum – there’s always something new to learn and so many knowledgable people to tap into – and I helped unearth the remains of an Albermarle recently too!!! 😮

Hi Nick,

I only have the A.P. for the Anson 18 to hand, but it quotes a tail wheel tyre size of 4.95 x 3.5 ins, Ref. W.M.14.

Cross referencing this in AP1086, it is the correct tyre size for the wheel I quoted above.

Used on Anson I, II, III and IV.

And as for the Albemarle tail wheel, I assume it’s the one which can plainly be seen in this photo:-

The Albermarle did have a tailwheel. OK more of a bump stop in the event of over rotation but a wheel none the less.

Thanks Alan

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply Alan – bit of a wide cross section there though? I could see Hurricane, Defiant and Lysander sharing a tailwheel & this would certainly fit with the size and apparent age, but I seem to recall the Anson one being a tad bigger & as for the Albermarle – tailwheel????? 😉

Come on you lot, this has been donated to a local museum (Southport) and is staying there, I’m not fishing for info just to stick it on eBay 😮 Now that should get some comments! :diablo:

Nick,

According to A.P.1086, Section 27A, a AHO5048/IX wheel was fitted to some Albemarles, Ansons, Defiants, Hurricanes and Lysanders.

Not quite a match in terms of reference numbers but close.
