Hello friends
I´m currently researching for an Ar 196 Luftwaffe instrument panel.
I´ve got this picture but don´t know the museum, where it is from.
Since there are no drawings of an Ar 196 panel around I´d love to take measurements of that one.
The only hint I have is, that it could be in Sola/Norway.
Thanks and kind regards,
Herbert

lake / reservoir
Hi,
AR-196, reminds me ……. did they ever get around to recovering the six (?) that were in that lake / reservoir in russia. ( on various boards about 4-5 years ago )
I seem to remember the a/c were sunk to avoid capture, but the recoveries were held up, something to do with the lake being the fresh water supply to the local city ?
Cheers
Jerry

The Finns and Romanians also operated the aircraft. Perhaps one of their archives might have information? Any Finns or Romanians out there that have any ideas on where to look?

Just an update:
There are three Ar 196 left…..and only one has still it´s instrument panel installed. The one an the NASM Washington.
Wow, didn´t expect that, what a challenge.
So still searching for cockpit pictures and drawings.
All the best,
Herbert

Someone of the National Naval Aviation Museum around?
Here is a progress report:
I figured out, that the panel in the showcase is a replica, the dimensions seem not to be correct.
So my next try is a request I´ve sent to the National Naval Aviation Museum
in Pensacola…..anyone in the forum who is related with the museum?
I asked them, if they might be so kind to take one specific measure of the instrument panel.
If anyone of the staff would be ready to climb into the cockpit it would be easy to measure that specific length and I could get my basic drawing to the right proportion.
Let´s see, if I have a chance.

They’re a pretty reasonable bunch from what I’ve heard from mates who visited. They may take them for you. It’s a bit of a hike up to the cockpit of a 196 so they may not want the public climbing up there.
Email them, they can only say no in the worst case.
I want some good pics of these Bulgarian 196s please ppl!

Ar 196 instrument panel
Thanks folks
Hmm, if I can´t find that panel, I might ask the US museums, if they´d let me take some measurements of the aircraft´s panels
I guess, I might need some personal contact to them, can everybody help.
Regards,
Herbert

There is an AR196 in the USA, it’s from the Prinz Eugen I think, was stored fro years at the base at Pennsacola. That would be the most complete one.
Any pics of the Arado’s mentioned above in Bulgaria or Norway?

The Flyhistorisk Museum, Sola has an Arado 196 recovered from the Blücher battleship which was sunk in the Oslofjord in April 1940 (by a fluke torpedo from an obsolete battery on an island I believe). I worked for a company called Rockwater at the time who also recovered the leaking fuel oil from the capsized hull. They found the 196 and recovered it for the museum in Stavanger. I recall it was fairly complete at that time, but had suffered from the seawater exposure. I saw it a couple of years later stripped down and it certainly looked like a complete fuselage tubular framework. They may have another parts donor too, though can’t confirm.

Thanks Chris
But I doubt, that they would let me climb into their plane to take measurements of the instrument panel. I´d rather have a chance with the panel in the showcase.

Hello Barnstormer
Thanks, I asked them, but they only have one Ar 96 trainer aircraft.

The Deutsche Technikmuseum, Berlin recovered an Arado Ar 196, I believe. And if they don’t have the actual part you need, they certainly did a lot of research on it, and might be able to help with dwgs or a source for them.
