Hi,
I will be in the UK the week of the BOB airshow and am interested in any WW2 “must sees” while I am there. I will attend the airshow on Saturday and Sunday. I plan on going to the RAF museum and the IWM museum in London. I will be in London for a week and I want to see all I can.
Thank you,
Scott

A friend of mine did Coningsby by public transport once You have to get the train to Lincoln and then there is a bus straight to the entrance but it takes about an hour from Lincoln so it’s possible but would be a long long day.

Yep charges for contactless and Oyster are the same.
There is also now a method of paying using an Apple app.

As far as I know Mr Merry, Oyster and chip are the same price both cheaper than paying individually, although you cannot do that on buses anyway. And the cap can make it very cheap.
Also the loss of an Oyster card is nothing, the loss of a debit card is a real pain.
And, of course, the bank charges are an important point.

Remember when using a credit card overseas you usually incur a transaction fee. This might actually be more than the cost of fare, so purchasing an Oyster would be cheaper.
Not sure if Shuttleworth Collection has been mentioned, open daily from 9.30am to 5.00pm The Airfield is only 3 mile from Biggleswade Railway station, on the main East Coast Line out of London Kings Cross, unless than 1 hour journey. By car from Shuttelworth to Duxford its about 30miles, allow 40 minutes to drive.

By swipe do you mean contact debit card? I thought that worked in same way as Oyster with same prices. How is it cheaper? It means you have to register your account. Credit never expires and refunds up to £10 can be obtained from tube ticket machines, a complete refund is available.
Yes, I just swiped my debt card (one with a chip in it), saves the hassle of refunds. I was told my a local that it works out cheaper.

The other RAF museum at Cosford is very do-able as a day trip by train from London, just over two hours each way with one change, and Cosford station is walking distance from the museum.
Park Inn has special rates if you tell them you are guest at Cosford. 🙂

Hi Gerry,
That would be great if it isn’t too much trouble!

I really appreciate all of your ideas so now I have a few more places to visit. I will arrive on 9/17 and depart 9/23 and I am staying in Holborn. I am really excited about my trip!

The WWI and VC galleries in the redone IWM are excellent and justify a visit in themselves. The rest of it, I’d agree, is poor. But don’t let that put you off, see it for yourself and make your own mind up.
Personally didn’t like the WW1 gallery. Now the VC is definitely worth a visit in itself but this gentleman has limited time

Hi Scott,
If you get are willing to take a train 30 minutes out of London to Kent I will meet you at the station and drive you to the battle of Britain museum at Hawkinge and the memorial at Capel Le Ferne.
We could stop at Kenley and Biggin Hill on the way back.
It would need an early start though.
Gerry
Great suggestion Battle of Britain Museum Hawkinge an absolute must.. whilst there you can also take in the B.o.B Memorial a Capel.. this would be a full day out..
Hawkinge will give you that personal side to the battle of Britain.
I try and visit at least 7 times per season and still find it extremely hard to take it all in.
Enjoy your stay.

Mr Merry.
Totally agree. IWM London is very poor there are much better things to see if you only have a week. This has been much debated and I got the impression that in general it was considered poor, in fact spoilt from what it had been.

Buy a public transport card, called an Oyster card, this covers you for travel on all public transport within the Greater London area with a very reasonable daily cap. Cash is not taken on any buses now.
I found swiping a card was cheaper than buying a visitor Oyster card and I didn’t have an Oyster card with credit left on it. Just a thought.

That’s an opinion rather than a fact.
Moggy
I didn’t think much of it when I visited earlier this year. Agreed my opinion, but an opinion shared by many.

OK thanks for that.

The Goodwood event is a couple of days after the Revival meeting, not the same thing. It is being fronted by the Boultbee folks.
By: paul1867 - 12th August 2015 at 14:58
I think Goodwood is pretty much sold out, certainly no grandstand or packages available and the OP was enquiring about Gold Passes for DX.
Think we need some feedback from OP where he is staying, size of party and interests.

Not sure how ‘unrealistic’ it is to travel to Coningsby/East Kirkby by public transport ! Looking at the train times it seems to take two hrs from London to Sleaford – then fourteen miles by bus or taxi to the BBMF !
It doesn’t seem a massive leap of faith to believe its possible to get to Lincolnshire in one day -maybe even stop at Cambridge on the return journey and overnight for Duxford in the morning !
