Not sure whether this is the right forum for this topic, but here goes. Is anyone out there the same (sad?) as me and thinks that certain tunes remind them of aircraft or aviation-related events? For example, “Close to You” by The Carpenters, “Say a little prayer” by Aretha Franklin and “For once in my life” by Stevie Wonder reminds me (God knows why!) of halcyon days at Battle of Britain At Home Days at Coltishall and “Sloop John B” by The Beach Boys reminds me of Great Yarmouth and pleasure-flying Austers. Maybe I need to go to a home for the bewidered and befuddled……..!

Ha Ha Skipper, same age as myself and I watched Warship about age of 7 too….Seems so long ago now.
I used to love it to from memory.
Back then I think they also had Westland Wasps operating from it on the series.

Turbo_NZ,
It was indeed “Warship”. Even now I remember getting up particularly early one Sunday Morning (aged 7) in 1977 to find out that “Sunday Worship” had no bloody frigates in sight!!!

Yes, I was thinking of the 70s/80s series which I think was called “Warship”.

I do remember watching that, if that’s the one and I think that’s where the Phantom scene came from….

I know the film sucks complete and utter ass, but the music for the trailer to “Pearl Harbor” always raises the hairs on my neck.
But that’s just me! 😉

Well certainly do love Floyd !!!
esp with the aviation connection they have with David Gilmour once owning a P-51:)

Come to think of it, the long opening sequence to “Shine On” was used in a documentary about the Confederate Air Force, many years ago.
Ah, ya gotta love the Floyd…

Great stuff !!

Got to be ‘Pomp and Circumstance’ at the end of Legends. Highly emotional, and the one thing the “commentators” dare NOT babble over.
As for the best song about avaition, what about ‘Amelia’ by Joni Mitchell??

Anyone who was at the Proms at Duxford last year would have seen the happiest bunch of soaking wet people that ever there was!
I think they audience my have been readers of Picnic Monthly more than FlyPast, but boy did they enjoy themselves watching aircraft to music.
‘Shine on you crazy diamond’ gets my vote too.

Hi LAHARVE,
If we are thinking of the same thing, Jerry popped ‘Pomp & Circumstance March’ by Elgar on at the end of Legends – the piece from which ‘Land of Hope & Glory’ comes from, but without the words, as it was originally written.
Cheers

There is a New Age/Oriental composition by Vangelis called ‘Chung Kuo’ which was used a few times at West Malling when Sally B flew IIRC. It was a significant part of my childhood and only discovered the name of this track last year. Brings back a lot of memories!

Agree with Steve Young, ‘Shine on You Crazy Diamond’, to the Fournier Pair, allways liked that piece of music.
Talking of Pink Floyd, does anybody remember their concert at Knebworth, I seem to remember their set starting with two Spitfires flying from behind the stage (not literaly).
Another piece of music I tend to associate with flying is the classical number Jerry Mead sometimes played at the end of ‘Flying Legends’.
Atatching image of Fournier Pair, sorry I can’t help it.

It’s often done badly, or ‘because whe have to because everyone else is’; but the Shine On… piece for the Forniers was unbeatable. Gliders displays also often go well to music, well chosen. Still see them whenever I hear it.
For those that did get to see ‘B25 Mitchells Do Fly IMC’ the most memorable items seemed to be Jeff Hawke’s immersion trousers(!) and Albatross by Fleetwood Mac over the B-25 to B-25 footage. Magic.
Least liked music at airshows is the (almost always) lightweight ‘commentator’. No, ta.

I can remember a Vulcan at Biggin displaying to ‘Mars’ from Holst’s Planet Suite – that seemed very appropriate and worked extremely well.
