I have just heard on CDUK some hideous rendition of Pink Floyds Comfortably Numb.
Why is it that no-one seems to bother writing their own stuff anymore, being content to cover other peoples work, and becoming nothing more than kareoke singers…
Wouldn’t they become better regarded if they did a bit more than stand there trying to look pretty?
At the moment I can hate the Scissor Sisters…

One mans tripe is someone elses cordon bleu…
These are just the ones that reached number one that I remember:-
70s – David Cassidy, The Osmonds, Bay City Rollers, If You Leave Me Now – Chicago (arrrgh!), Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dog – Brian and Michael (zzz!).
80s – Shaddap You Face – Joe Dolce Music Theatre, Theres No One Quite Like Grandma – St Winifreds School Choir, Japanese Boy – Aneka, Seven Tears – The Goombay Dance Band (the only group with a fire-eater to acheive a UK no1…!), I’ve Never Been To Me – Charlene, Save Your Love – Renee and Renato, Only You – Flying Pickets, Phil Collins, Musical Youth, Shakin’ Stevens, Band Aid, Spitting Image, Rick Astley, Bros, Jive Bunny.
90s – Vanilla Ice, Bombalurina, Chesney Hawkes, (Everything I Do) I Do It For You – Bryan Adams, Jimmy Nail, Take That, Mr Blobby, Robson and Jerome, Spaceman – Babylon Zoo, Killing Me Softly – Fugees, I believe I Can Fly – R Kelly, Hanson, Perfect Day – the Children In Need hash-up, Because We Want To – Billie.
Feel free to fill in the gaps;).

Although it has to be asked who you do respect… Elvis maybe (care to name one song that he wrote that anyone could recognise)? Did Sinartra write all his songs? Elton John had Bernie Taupin, but did do a lot of his own lyrics and music for his albums. Kylie even!
We were spoilt in the 70s, 80s, and much of the 90s in Britain – our performers, for the most part, wrote and played their own music. The sad fact is that many of todays musicians can’t write lyrics, and the lyricists can’t write music – and the record companys won’t take chances anyway.
Popular music is dead. – Nermal

Going back to the point about small bands never getting noticed, it doesn’t seem fair does it? They try all they can, with whatever equipment they can afford, playing wherever they’re given a chance. And then I found out today, after tickets for the RHCP gig in Hyde Park went on sale at 9am yesterday, they were sold out by 9:33am! We (me and my mates) managed to grab 7 tickets, and so it looks like I should be going…….aslong as someone else isn’t willing to pay more for a ticket than me!

In the London area there is loads of small good bands,i have 2 friends both in bands and i try help out and be involved in both of them but with both bands have members around my age(Near30) i guess local is all it will be.
What i have noticed is as some of the big name gigs ive been to there are a lot of young people there even at the Rolling Stones at Twickenham last year,so some younger people are into better music,I am looking forward to hopefully getting a chance to see the RHCP play this year and reckon there crowd be a all ages one.

Spot on Ren. My youngest daughter is heavily into the music scene where we live and she usually drags me along to a couple of gigs when I am home and its surprising how much talent there is around but the poor sods never get heard beyond their local areas.
Also, I am as nostalgic as anyone for sixties and seventies music but as a friend of mine pointed out you also tend to forget there was a lot of dross around in those days as well. Maybe someone could start a thread naming tripe songs from that era. I’ll start it – “Tie a yellow ribbon”….:p

Yes it really annoys me with all this manufactured pop that seems to be hitting the UK like the black death did. It’s contagious with all these children and people trying to get in with the crowd! It also annoys me when bands like Busted call themselves ‘rock’. I like to class them as just another pop boy-band, they are a group of boys and all there songs are the same! But apparently they’re not
I like to buy my albums from websites such as play.com, cd-wow.com and cd-jungle.com. They are around £8.99 on average, with free p&p, which is much better from the shops. But still, unless it is one of my favourite bands or an album that I really want, I will just download it on kazaa because it is still too expensive! Does anyone know what the situation is with downloading songs on kazaa these days, becuase I have heard so many different stories? Some people say that there is a law which means they can’t fine you, others say stop downloading now becuase people in the UK are too going to be fined before long.
Rock rules! I’m sitting here patiently for the day when the ‘crowd’ follow rock, instead of RnB. But I can’t see this happening too soon. Does anyone else here like bands such as Feeder, RHCP, The Coper Temple Clause and Placebo? Feeder are my favourite band, seeing them live in December was just absolutley brilliant! I’ve also begun to like some Punk bands, and Ska can alos be fun! There is a local music hall for rock and punk bands here, where I spend a lot of my Saturday evenings. Some bands like Inme and Rancid originally played here, and now they’re doing quite well. It’s also good to follow small bands like this I think as they tend to be a lot better than some of the more popular bands that you already know! You also can’t beat a bit of more ‘classic’ rock, like Queens of the Stone Age and Iron Maiden.

I heard the comfortably numb song ruined today too, there should be rules against it,If its not the pop idles(idols my bum idols can write play and SING!) or fame acedemy lot ruining songs its boom boom dj’s or talentless teenage pop acts,it pains me to hear great songs so ruined.
There is still great music out there bands like starsalior and snow patrol have impressed me lately, and stereophonics and travis have managed to do there own songs and when they do covers they are good versions,i don’t listen to much chart music now and my radio listening is mainly Virgin and sometimes radio 2 when Bob Harris is on,and Jools Holland is worth a watch on TV and sometimes a listen on the radio,His TV show has showcased a few new good acts in its time.
One thing i am glad to see is Rock is making a come back and bands like the Darkness are bound to do good for this even if they are just a fun band,Its just be nice to see music in the chart that is not just for teenagers and is not cover versions.

Work out how much you can buy cds for burning at home for – then take into account the hugh discount that the record companies get for mass bulk buying and take that as the cost price for a cd.
Then think of how many cds you can make from an industrial sized cd burning machine – and add a bit to the price you have already.
Now add what you think should go to the writers, the musicians, the management, the PR people, the staff at all the factories, etc, and maybe even a bit for the artist.
Now add a bit more for the staff in the rord shop.
Now treble it and call that difference profit.
Music industry – bit like a singing highway-man…

Talking about downloading brings me to another point. Some people may download music, but it doesn’t stop everyone from buying cds. Hell, the music industry makes far too much money anyway, Britain pays the highest price for CDs, I feel that the music industry is too greedy. I still buy CDs but only at reasonable prices, usually in tescos where they’re cheap, but if you got to virgin/mvc you can end up paying £15.99. My mum tell be that the ol albums used to be only £3/4 in the 60s/70s, bring back those prices!!!!!!;)

Children and the desperate to be hip crowd.
Unfortunately the kids don’t have a great deal of money so the eager wannabies have to spread their image across many mediums – witness all those special guest stars on childrens TV shows, etc – to try and wrestle the cash from the infants.
The desperate to be hip crowd include the mother dressing like her teenage daughter, bare midriff and all. Act your age woman!!!
As for singles – didn’t I hear this last week that the format is on the virge of being withdrawn due to downloading being more popular?

Another problem with the modern pop industry is that it seems to be aimed at children. Does anybody over the age of 16 bother buying singles?-Not many. Too many onehit wonders polluting the radio waves Flood.
Avoid pop music at all costs.

As well as not being origianl, many know songs that are written, by the likes of sophy ellis baxter are made just to ryhme in order that you’ll remember it in your head, when really the song means nothing.
If you want descent original music don’t watch cduk, the best music is the stuff that isn’t in the charts, though sometimes a good band will come along, like coldplay for instance.
Rock music is best, yeah Ted nugent I hope your still out there making music.!!!!!:)
To tell the truth I was flicking through the teletext pages but without turning the noise off…
Individual words floated through that rang bells in my mind, but it was almost the end of the song before I recognised that which I held dear.
It is unfortunate that in this day and age the charts are ruled by the cult of beauty over ability, remanufactured over originality. Still, when they fail to make an impression after a few songs and get dropped by their record companys they will be able to cheer their workmates with tales of their time at the top in between flipping burgers…

At least you don’t have to spend Saturday mornings getting out of bed when the clubbers come home, having to film rehearsal after rehearsal of the talentless wonders…

Yep. I think. In fact it took me about 3 minutes to figure it out even though I’d only listened to The Wall two nights ago…
The singers seemed to have shrieking voices – even the blokes. Hateful.
Just awful.
