hey all
Ok, so this is pretty random:
Going through a terminal as a passenger can be quite stressful, so what do you think about the idea of playing music over the PA system? Certain genres of music are supposed to relax you and calm you down – do you think it would be a nice touch to hear music in the background as you wait in those long, annoying queues for security or as you wait to collect your baggage?
Any thoughts as to whether its practical or worthwhile? Or is the thought of listening to (classical?) music in an airport terminal a little silly or corny? Would it work do you think to help pass the time or relax you a little?
I’m sure some airports already play music over some sort of sound system?
thanks
Adam 🙂

Then you also have the issue of trying to please everyone’s taste in music…not everyone enjoys ‘chillout/easy listening/instrumental’ music.
But you forget most Chavs can’t afford to fly!!

I think music would be a good idea in airports as it would relax people better, but the biggest problem is that because people just pass through an airport, they would probably not be bothered by what was coming through the PA system; unless it was an announcement to say that their flight had been delayed/cancelled!

Here are some other ideas that I think airports should do in order to make passengers journeys less stressful…
1. Turn radiators off during periods of hot weather. Here at LGW, they are always switched on, which makes it very hot ‘n’ stuffy indeed.
2. Improve air-conditioning system to allow better air-flow around the building. Combined with the body-heat and sweaty smell of passengers, it is not very pleasent!
3. Encouraged use of self-service check-in kiosks to reduce queues at check-in. I know Northwest, Virgin Atlantic, Thomsonfly and Sterling all use the same kiosks here at LGW…perhaps more airlines should be encouraged to sign-up to use them!
4. More security staff to reduce queues.
You just described NCL perfectly, 1 HELLLOOOOO carbon fottprint engergy wasting HELOOOOO
2)Bingo combined with No.1 horrible place to work
3) yeah when you can’t get into work for the q’s at checkin you know theres a problem
4) its not even my job but i have to help in security!!!!

Generally something along the lines of Joni Mitchell if I’m nice and relaxed or Rammstein if things arn’t going too well.

I heard nice music coming from a bar in Prestwick airport departures today. It was actually a tv music channel but you could hear it wherever you were. It was nice to hear it in between the announcements for the Girona flight getting seriously delayed 😎

When I went through LPA last summer, they played soothing music in the terminal which I thought quite a good idea. They only played it in the queuing areas such as check-in and security. Once in the departure lounge there was no music. It seemed to work quite well. I find that the check-in areas can get quite noisy and it did appear to calm peoples nerves.

Come to the main terminal at GLA, where you can enjoy the ‘cash register overture’ all day long !
You can’t even hear the planes taking off anymore !
You could play ozzy osbourne at full volume at NCL and you will still no there is a Departing/Arriving A/C – The ceiling tiles shake and it sounds like there is an earthquake shaking the building, i swear that airport is built out of balsa wood

USA airport music
While at the airport I analyze/scan each person in view while standing in line,
(and listen to my mp3 player/radio if sitting). But, I wouldn’t mind PA system
playing “In America” by Charlie Daniels, or “Rock The Casbah” by the Clash.:D

Sadly in India… the vocabulary for music at airports is either Indian classical or that godforsaken Kenny G who, i am surprised hasent died of chronic depression from his own music yet.
Sadly at airports you cant have your Ipod so as to not miss any important announcements. I think some of the best music i heard was at Kastrup… GnR, Deep Purple and Status Quo. Its still my favourite airport (and city) till date.

Nine Inch Nails or Cradle of Filth for me…:diablo:
I refer you to post 13 dear sir

thanks for the replies!
Ok, I’m thinking that music in large halls and departure lounges (like check in areas), which are not uncommon in airports, wouldnt work. So, how about music played in walkways, and piers or places similar to, for example Manchesters Skywalk, or Gatwicks huge new pier bridge?
How about, and this may sound silly – musicians. I’m thinking along the lines of the entertainers on the London Underground (ok, so they’re buskers), but also the performers that you find in city squares or large shopping centres.
I’m trying to think of ways to cheer up the average traveller and make their journey through the terminal more ‘interesting’.

I don’t think early english church music would have much appeal in an airport Steve…?
😀 :dev2:

Nooooo!!! I hate music. Well, not all of it of course, but loads of it. Therefore the chances that Cheap and Cheerfull International Airport will play the sort of music I like is slim and therefore I will be pissed off even more than I already am at waiting an hour to pick up my bags.
And whilst we are at it, I would ban piped music from just about everywhere – supermarkets, hotel lobbies, gyms. If you want to listen to music, take an MP3 player.

Leave it in elevators where it belongs!!
