Sorry to ask you to comment on Drumming 🙂
…but what is it about Ringo’s drumming which draws so much criticism? I’ve long been a Beatles fan and not really noticed “Bad” drumming. Lately I’ve got all 12 Studio albums on the 2009 remaster. Again, I can’t see a problem. Groups in those days had a drummer with a 6 or 7 piece kit, his job was to assist the Bassist, do an opener or a closer and indicate rhythm change.
Buddy Rich was the best drummer of the day, but the Jazz he played devoted solo’s to him.
On the pop/rock scene only in the 70’s did the drummer become “Important” with Big-heads like Full Collins, and Rock groups using a kit with as many pieces as possible…for no apparent musical reason.
So, given the role of a drummer in a 60’s R&B/pop group, what was wrong with Ringo’s drummin?

Within that strict context, not an awful lot.
I do have to take issue with one thing in your post, though.
Have you ever see Phil Collins playing with a big band?
Always a far better drummer than he’s given credit for these days – and the poor sod’s had to retire from playing on medical grounds..
