BRITAIN’S biggest fun park has sparked a race row — with a MUSLIMS-ONLY day.
Up to 28,000 are expected at Alton Towers on September 17 when there will be no music, booze or gambling.
Instead there will be prayer areas, Muslim stalls and all food served will be HALAL.
Organisers Islamic Leisure have billed it the First National Muslim Fun Day and tickets can only be bought through their website.
Non-Muslims phoning the Staffordshire park have been refused tickets.
One, George Hughes, 19, who rang up for 15 tickets for a pal’s birthday, said: “I couldn’t believe it.
“It’s the only day we can go, yet I can’t because I’m not Muslim. Can you imagine all the fuss if there was a Christians-only day?”
George, of Crayford, Kent, added: “My Muslim friends think it’s outrageous.
“What’s the world coming to when people are being banned from flying the St George’s flag yet this sort of day is allowed? If it must be held, then why not on a weekday rather than a busy weekend?”
The event is widely promoted on the internet and the Muslim Public Affairs Committee declared it “exclusively for our brothers and sisters”.
But some Muslims have condemned the idea. One university student on a Muslim website forum said: “It’s hardly encouraging integration.”
Another said: “What next . . . an all Muslims shopping day out in the Trafford Centre in Manchester?”
Abid Hussan of Islamic Leisure insisted the day was open to all faiths, although Islamic laws would apply.
He added: “There will be no smoking, no alcohol and halal food only.
“We’re trying to get Muslims to go to this day because they wouldn’t normally go somewhere like Alton Towers. We’re trying to integrate Muslims into the wider community. People can come down and see the way we live. It will be a peaceful family environment.”
Alton Towers said any organisation could hire the park for a day.
A spokeswoman said “We make no distinction regarding sexuality, religious, ethnic or lifestyle choices.”
She confirmed tickets for the day were now available only through Islamic Leisure. And Alton Towers would promote the fact that the day had been booked.
She added: “As a general rule, there will be no admission on the day to guests who have not booked through the organisation in advance.”

Well going way back that might have been the case ? However these days the population is much more diverse and im sure the country now plays host to many different religious ideas. I for one don’t beleive in god but others do and thats fine. We all have our own opinions at the end of the day. However everyone that obides by the law in this country should be treated in the same manner and that is not the case in this country. The goverment seems to be scared by the minority groups and i don’t understand why ? 🙁

Having read through this I would just like to mention that the link in the first post is for The Sun, trash that would have us believe that every muslim in the world is a terrorist.
I also enjoy the ” I’m not racist, BUT…..
I’m with Grey Area and Ren Frew.
Ah yes The Sun, the same tabloid that has all of us Scots as English hating thugs ready to pounce and kill at the sight of an England football jersey…. 😡

.
The newspapers by printing such a story could fuel hatred also and that worries me, We are delicate times at the moment and the Terror threat is high i really hope this eventgies without a problem.

Oh, I wasn’t doubting his word for a moment, Barnowl. I was just curious about the source – as I said, urban myths fascinate me. 🙂

What remarkable clarity and perspective Ren Frew.
Grey Area, I also remember there being a news story about the first of worthyone’s points- i’ll see if I can pull out the story.

Strikes me that all this is a nice little private booking for the day made by a bunch of nice people representing some other nice people who don’t want alcohol and other nasties on display while they play the dodgems.
Who cares ? I believe Rod Stewart once booked out Alton Towers for his family and mates to have a day out. Ok you may find tartan clad blonde haired rock lotharios offensive but at the end of the day he was paying for it and the ‘train set’ therefore became his for the day.
Same thing here really…

The main thing that concerns me about things such as this is the way it causes Segregation in the community, We all live in one country and are Citizens of that country, So we should all live as one and not segregate ourselves, By segregation we build up fear hate and missunderstanding, The very thing that terror groups and fanatics play on.
The newspapers by printing such a story could fuel hatred also and that worries me, We are delicate times at the moment and the Terror threat is high i really hope this eventgies without a problem.

Im not racist, but i must admit i think this is ridiculous as its been said before, imagine the uproar of “Christian Only Day” Muslims that im friends with would say we’re racist! but i’ve got to say, my muslim friends have said this is terrible terrible idea! Do you all think it may cause an uproar on the day?, Lets not forget there are racist people in the UK, and on the day do you think they may be an uproar? or do you think it will be let go queitly?
Jon
(If i did i didnt mean to offend anyone!)

Ahhh…. so it is one of those things that “everyone knows”, then?
Thanks for the confirmation.

Grey Area, where do u live? Ever heard of a place called Small Heath? Ask any Pakistani what happened with the Bangladeshi community there and u will have ur answer ok, please just because u haven’t heard of it and because the council didn’t publish it on their website doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. The internet ISN’T all knowing…u know?

You are right, Islam is not a race, that is why people who criticise Islam should not be tried in court on jumped-up “race hate” charges (strange how Muslims can call for terror attacks, for “non believers” to be killed etc without fear of prosecution).
But this is religious discrimination.
And yes, there are instances where job adverts specify particular race requirements. Many employers go on what race you say you are when you fill in an application form. People have been denied access to jobs purely for being white (especially in some police forces).

I see, worthyone.
Urban myths are a particular fascination of mine, and I thought for a moment that it was one of those things that “everyone” knows.
Like the story that emerges every year about the loony left-wing council that “banned Christmas” so as not to offend ethnic/religious minorities – even though no-one is ever specific about which council and when.
So, which area of Birmingham was this? I should imagine there was considerable controversy and media coverage when this story broke and I’ve tried googling for more information but I’ve drawn a complete blank.

No drinking or gambling on that day, so why would anyone want to go?

Grey Area, the housing issue I am referring to was a couple of years back in a largely Muslim area of Birmingham, West Midlands. It was felt by the council that the newly built houses should be occupied by Bangladeshi’s only as many Bangaldeshi familes did not want to integrate with other communities…that includes Indian/Pakistani communities btw. Many people complained as there was at the time, and I believe there still is, a housing problem and houses being built for one community rather upset many people on the council waiting lists not of that grouping. This was especially as the decision contradicted the councils “Pro-Integration” policies at the time.
Also, again a couple of years back, Asian companies that did not want to hire other ethnic groups managed to find a loop-hole that allowed them to hire only Asians without being accused of racism by stating that the job applicants would be required to speak Bengali or Urdu. This was during a time when jobs in Brum were at an all time low and many people — not just English but also various ethnic groups — found this irritating. Some Asian business’s still do this btw, if you go to one of the job centres and look thru the job lists u will find the occasional one with the same requirements. U can argue that this is not discrimination, but u try telling someone desperate for a job that it is ok to do this and I bet he/she will have a thing or two to say 😡

With all due respect, kfadrat, I think you’re over-reacting. As, indeed, are many other contributors to this thread.
Your point about Islam not being a race is, however, a very good one and one that is often lost on people who do not appreciate the true size and scope of a religion whose heartland stretches in a great arc from North Africa to Indonesia and up towards China, encompassing people of many different races and ethnicities.

When the evangelicals hire large stadia, there never seems to be too much fuss just because they want a families day out a few rides on the dodgems so what.
As for the 30th september ive booked it,for strawberry blonds with club left feet,so any of you none limping gingers will have to see me for tickets.
By: kfadrat - 1st July 2006 at 19:34
In what way is it outrageous or ignorant, kfadrat?
ok, I’ll quote it again to show what’s ignorant and outrageous:
BRITAIN’S biggest fun park has sparked a race row — with a MUSLIMS-ONLY day.
the question asked again: ” WHAT DOES ISLAM HAS TO DO WITH RACE??? “
answer as seen by almost all Moslems: ” THE WEST STEROTYPES US IN DIFFERENT WAYS, THIS IS JUST ONE OF THEM! “
Islam; like all religions is a global message, NOT a racial message!
hope my point is clear now!

This is nothing new to Britain, does anyone remember the housing estate for Bangladeshi families only or the job vacancies being advertised for Asians only?
Frankly, no I don’t.
Can you refresh my memory?
