During WW2 the Oakey area was home to 6AD which was a satellite repair depot for Raaf Amberly .After the war she became a graveyard for over 500 planes which included MkV and MkVIII Spitfires,P40 Kittyhawks,CAC Boomerangs,Beaufighters and P51 Mustangs. These were all eventually scrapped from 1946 through to 1949 with little to no thought of preserving any of them for history. Some guys on the job even asked to keep some for prosperity but little could be done to stop the destruction.Anyway also during the late war period brand new CAC Mustangs were assembled there and test flown and some going onto the occupational forces of Japan after the war.The base died slowly after that to become a gliding field and eventually a thriving Army Aviation base with no more sounds of Merlins to be heard again..Till Today!!:D
CAC Ca-18 Mk21 Mustang “Snifter” arrives.. Arriving for our first Fly In that the base has held in many years. Also to arrive tomorrow is Temoras Hudson and some Chippies, the Aerotech T28,s,the Beech 18.Also a Mk3 Auster arrived which has a fantastic history and a lot more to hopefully come.

Good News – Being a Brisbane Boy, I like to hear good news for Australia. I worked at Oakey in the mid 1970’s as a Radio Tech with the then Dept of Civil Aviation. Lived at the pub in Oakey for about 4 months.
