My complaint to Ofcom

Programme title:
Big Brother

Date and time of broadcast
(e.g. 01 January 2009 23:00):
23 Jun 2009 22:00

Channel / station:
Channel 4

Subject:
Animal Neglect and Religious Racism

Description:
I was upset to see animals that were in such a condition being slaughetered on British TV as in my view it goes against the ethical outlook of animals and I was deeply upset by it that I had to look away as I began to cry.

Secondly, I was very angry at the housemate Marcus as he cut of the leg of a pig to take it into the garden as a “joke” as it was offensive to religious followers of Islam and Hiduism as they see porcine creatures as important animals in their culture and I found what happened offensive to their religion.

Overall I am very disheartened by what I saw and think Channel 4 need to think harder to put things on their show that doesn’t offend people like this crap just has to me!

It wasn’t them eating meat that made her cry, it was that she thought that what the housemates done with the leg of the pig was an OFFENSE to her RELIGION

Her choice of religious belief does not bind the actions, thoughts or opinions of others.

As I said earlier, no-one has the right never to be offended. This includes yourself and your friend.

I think this thread has taken up quite enough of everyone’s time now.

I can see where you’re coming from heslop01. I grew up in a town called Southall in west london which is predominantly known for being a very ethnic town. I can take a guess that a fair few of my old school friends probably didnt take too kindly to what went on with that pig.

she cried because just seeing a pig was offensive to her.

That is one of the most irrational and ridiculous things I have ever heard. She finds seeing a pig offensive? Don’t you think that’s just ever so slightly weird/pathetic/stupid/extreme? (Delete as appropriate).

Robbie, the outside world’s going to give you a shock when you encounter it. If pigs weren’t intended to be reduced to their component parts then they wouldn’t taste so amazingly good.

Stop wasting peoples’ time with such pathetic complaints and attention-seeking behaviour.

In order to provide a llittle balance to the thread….

Paul, as said above, it was the fact that she saw somebody rubbing the leg of a pig on someone, she cried because just seeing a pig was offensive to her.

The poor girl…..imagine never being able to wander through the meat section of a supermarket without being reduced to a quivering wreck!!!.

Distaste at someone waving a pigs leg about the place is quite understandable…its not exactly standard behaviour and personally I have never, sober, ran around wielding the severed leg of any farmyard animal that I can think of. I’ve chucked a few chicken drumsticks at people in my time but somehow I think thats a bit different!.

To burst into tears at the sight of a pig is probably going to have a seriously handicapping impact on your friends life though so you may be advised to encourage her to grow a slightly thicker skin or seek help controlling her emotions. Muslims are quite capable of dealing with the sight of pigs and people hungrily devouring various large chunks of them!.

On to the issue of devouring chunks of former pig it is heartening to see that so many true believers in the power of the bacon sarnie lurk hereabouts. The worrying thing is that no-one has seen the light that is a couple of thin-ish slices of well cooked black pudding and HP sauce with the crispy bacon. Takes things to the next level in bacon sandwichery!.

I was talking about my friend who (when I was talking to her on facebook at the same time as we were watching it) started to cry her eyes out.

What exactly was it that made her start crying her eyes out?

Your friend must have led a very sheltered life indeed to over-react to such an extent.

The majority of people are happy to eat meat, whether you and your friend like it or not.

Deal with it.

Re-reading that last sentence of Robbie’s,I’m just glad he’s not doing an English degree. It’s also true that if you ARE offended you should never be afraid to let the right people know.I’ve complained about a couple of things to ITV and the Advertising Standards Agency and had very reasonable replies .

Surely you mean Bacon & Mushroom?

Oh, yes!

Lightly toasted white bread, not-too-crispy bacon, sliced mushrooms, touch of Colman’s English mustard and ground garlic pepper.

Damn it…..I’m suddenly starving! :diablo:

Secondly, I was very angry at the housemate Marcus…

I find the whole concept of Big Brother offensive; but apparently it is popular with those who have nothing better to do. Trust me, you are far too intelligent to be concerning yourself with anything that is arranged to β€˜happen’ on Big Brother.

This isn’t the first time and won’t be the last. Have you seen any of the popular chef shows? The first that springs to mind is Heston’s Feasts (which I thought was an excellent series). I can’t think of a particular episode, but has Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsey not had shows where they’ve ‘cooked from scratch’? At the end of the day, all meat products are at this stage at some point in the process, the human race did not get to where it is today with cavemen eating vegetables.

Secondly, I was very angry at the housemate Marcus as he cut of the leg of a pig to take it into the garden as a “joke” as it was offensive to religious followers of Islam and Hiduism as they see porcine creatures as important animals in their culture and I found what happened offensive to their religion.

For those who did not see it, it was a trotter that was cut off – perhaps 10cm in length. Perhaps distasteful to some, there will be others who see the funny side of it. And it wasn’t just Marcus; Charlie had a go with it as well.

Heslop, who do you think it was religiously offensive towards in the house? The only person I can think of is Sree. Sree, the annoying man who in one episode was freely handling raw bacon and put it in sandwiches (uncooked) and gave it to other housemates. People, glasshouses, stones, shouldn’t etc

Overall I am very disheartened by what I saw and think Channel 4 need to think harder to put things on their show that doesn’t offend people like this crap just has to me!

I think your complaint would have had a lot more stature to it had you not unfortunately used that obscenity in the last sentence.

Heslop, I am sorry if this comes across as me having a go at you by picking apart your complaint – I’m not. I am merely proving my opposing opinion on the matter. Ofcom does serve a very important role and it is there to be used. I, however, would not have complained in this instance.

Note to mods: Shouldn’t we rename this ‘The Bacon Lovers Thread?’ πŸ˜‰

That reminds me of Madeira last year. Pizza Hut did a pizza called Bacon Lovers and it was amazing. Mr Spalding will remember it well, I’m sure! πŸ˜€

Were you offended yourself or are you taking it upon yourself to be offended on someone else’s behalf? I never could understand why people sometimes do that.

Can you elaborate on the pig in question? I’m assuming it wasn’t a live animal? If its a cooked Hog, then what is the problem with cutting a leg off?

More importantly……..

Bacon, smoked, crispy, vast amounts of………sauces are either HP or Ketchup, depending on mood. Thick white bread (buttered)………. perfect bacon sandwich. πŸ˜€

I forgot to add that this beans in tomato sauce thing should be banned for the good of humanity.. Looks like someone’s yesterday’s breakfast πŸ˜‰

As for the bacon, crispy I say, with scrambled eggs, salsa, cheddar, all inside of a tortilla. There you go!

As for the original post, I would object to BB for being complete rubbish, personally. You wouldn’t catch me dead watching this.

Personally, I beleive a good (soft yolk) fried egg goes well with any breakfast bun – including a bacon one. HP sauce is a must though.
