My efforts from North Weald 25/04/10

It didn’t look promising when I left the house and it was raining, but in the end it was a great day.

[QUOTE=Ewan Hoozarmy;1576206]Hey, i’ve never been accused of being “bristling” before…
Put it this way. We all went to great expense & trouble to take some old aeroplanes to North Weald in typical crap summer weather for people to start moaning that “they look wrong”…Any wonder we get naffed off by it?
QUOTE]

To bristle : react angrily…was that not valid ? I do understand your statement above : I wasn’t moaning, and apologise if that seemed to come across : my only intended point was that the monochrome photograph of the Spitfire (look at it again) with no ‘modern’ background clutter, no haircuts from Natasha in the High Street, no hi-viz baseball cap backwards, just looked so good : rather nostalgic , reflecting the period, and if you prefer, old-fashioned. We are fortunate that you and many others like you go to the trouble and yes, considerable expense, to let us all enjoy your aircraft. A sunny summer’s day would be preferable certainly, and as I have cast my vote today let’s hope the new government can do something about that!
So no more misunderstandings please, no offence intended, I assure you, and let’s bury our hatchets on that conciliatory note. By the way, when you’re not flying a Tiger Moth, what’s your usual mount, is it in the shots above?:)

Please don’t tell the Queen Bee guys that one of them should resemble a 1930’s wireless control box!!!

I’m going to wear a hi-viz baseball cap backwards and ear plugs next time…That looks wrong as well, but hey, its a free country..

And I repeat my last statement again.. smug or not:rolleyes:

PS I do wear a leather helmet in a Tiger Moth but only ‘cos a hard helmet catches the breeze too much!

PPS Nice pics by the way

I know needs must when safety rules apply but imho the bonedomes look ‘wrong’ in these aircraft.

I did qualify my statement, and TheMightyOz was kind enough to agree. My initial post mentioned the safety aspect and I totally agree with the need for such apparel : what I take exception to is the posturing and bristling in post #10 who chose to miss my point entirely. His concluding sentence was totally unnecessary and smug. But hey : we still have free speech, everyone’s entitled to an opinion, but please just read and understand the content of posts before throwing a wobbly!

We only said it LOOKS wrong, not it IS wrong. I’d wear the safest modern equipment myself if I was flying these aircraft.

Bit like climbing Everest in 1920s gear. Why should modern pilots be less than as safe and as comfortable as possible when flying these beautiful old aircraft for our pleasure?

Authentic leather versus modern Kevlar – it’s a no brainer, literally..

When you get to fly one, you can wear whatever you like….

very well said

It’s just as well you didn’t notice my modern trousers, my modern watch (but at least not battery powered!), my modern yet totally unauthentic US flying suit and my modern cotton Y-fronts..!!! Modern shoes by Timberland, modern haircut by Natasha in the High street.. Modern attitude to life and not old enough to have seen authentic war service…

As one of the visiting pilots who had the sheer audacity to wear a ‘modern’ bone dome, I’ll just go with my head protecting instincts and not give a hoot about what looks right or wrong! If you wear an ‘authentic’ leather helmet with no other noise attenuation in most big warbirds, you’ll be deaf in 10 minutes, and also wouldn’t stand a chance if your head hit anything! Authentic leather versus modern Kevlar – it’s a no brainer, literally..

When you get to fly one, you can wear whatever you like….

I agree with you, bms44, on the bone domes looking wrong, as demonstrated here in the Queen Bee at Little Gransden last year.

I just thought the Spit photo was crying out for monochrome what with the leather helmet and no people, cars, etc. in the frame to give it away as modern.

Oh, and no the Seafire didn’t fly.

Nice selection of photos, good to see the Spit driver wearing the leather headgear : I know needs must when safety rules apply but imho the bonedomes look ‘wrong’ in these aircraft. The monochrome effect helps with the period feel too, but that was no accident, I imagine!;) Did the Seafire not fly, by the way?
