My favourite Mosquito

Thought it about time to put a Mossie piccie onto the forum. My favourite of all the Mosquito variants, the B IX.

Cheers,
Neilly

RE: My favourite Mosquito

Hi Bruce,
Yes, I know all about F-bar Freddie & it’s sad end. It’s ironical that aircraft & crew went through the war & then crashed on a goodwill visit to Canada, days after the war ended. A real shame.

Cheers,
Neilly

For more info on “F” for Freddie log onto the Aero Space Museum of Calgary’s site at www.asmac.ab.ca
Here you will find the story of Freddie’s tragic end.

RE: My favourite Mosquito

The motors are a couple of Mackay 45’s, turning 3 blade 22″x10″ props. I’m not keen on using 2 bladers, even though it’s usually the norm. The reason, when I see photos, of some of these beautiful large scale models, & then you see a 2 blade prop – the illusion of the real thing is broken. I just think it’s a bit of a shame!
Me & Mrs Neilly have occasional moments. I super glued, accidentally, the cover over the kitchen table! Ooops- lead ballon time!!!
No, I don’t mind a bit of modification.

Cheers,
Neilly

Strewth! I bet your popular with ‘her indoors’ when she catches you out by coming home early from a shopping trip!!

My missus almost stalls when I bring aircraft bits THROUGH the kitchen, and god help me if I slow down my pace or make to put the item down within her view!!! 🙂

Your missus must have the patience of a saint 🙂

Hey, it’s a bloody good job by the way, keep it up! What sort of engines are you gonna use? (Baby Merlins?)

RE: My favourite Mosquito

When the wife’s away, Neilly extra building room! The garage is too cold, sometimes, so it’s into the kitchen, when I can!
The Mossie isn’t to bad for the ammount of area it takes up, at the moment. The wings are split & plug into the fuz. The wings rest on top of the wardrobe, at the moment, (I’m not quite sure where they’re going to reside, when the engines are ammounted, permanently). The fuz, well that’s proping up a wall in the living-room. Quite an original conversation piece. Most people have pictures & orniments, not me, I got a Mossie fuz!

Cheers for now,

Neilly

RE: My favourite Mosquito

I’ve been building this 1/5th scale for nearly 3 years! I some how feel a lawyer & a divorce court might get involved if I went for anything bigger!
At this moment in time, there are 2 wings being worked on & a whole pile of tools, wood etc in the kitchen. Another hour & it’s hover, duster & polish out, before the wife gets in from work (every other Monday I get to work on the Mossie- Mosquito Monday!). I have a picture, on the CD that I’ve keeping as a sort of building diary of my progress, I’ll cut it down in size & post it & you can see what Mrs. Neilly has to put up with!

All the best,
Neilly

Oh dear, all those dials!! Your teeth must have fallen out and your skin must have all fallen off by now?!?

Sorry, just being a bit “boystrus” (can’t spell either) with the dial ‘thing’ that’s doing the rounds at the moment.

Ever thought of making a 1:1 scale cockpit section? You MUST have the skill & ability considering the way you made your R/C Mossie!

RE: My favourite Mosquito

Hi Halibag,
Cheers mate, but I’ve already played that game, at the Mosquito Museum. I spent a whole afternoon photographing & measuring the cockpit. It was a cold & miserable April day, outside. I got into the cockpit with a thick winter jumper on, but within minutes I was sweating so much I had to take it off. The cockpit doesn’t half warm up quick! However, if you’d like to take some piccies that would be great.
One thing you could do for me is to pass on my best wishes to Tony. I’ve been watching his progress over the years. The last time I was up at Elvington, they’d just fitted the undercart, so I guess early 90’s was the last time I visited. I really should come more often. I don’t have much of an excuse as my In-Laws come from Hull. I think I’ll make a concerted effort to visit, soon, perhaps we might meet up.

All the very best,
Neilly

RE: My favourite Mosquito

Hi Neilly,

Tony Agar (HJ711) is a good freind of mine & so, I guess if I had the urge, I could go & play “Sit in the Mossie” all day long, but it’s awfully cold in YAM’s hangar!

Super aircraft, irrespective of her role!

RE: My favourite Mosquito

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-02-02 AT 03:46 PM (GMT)]No Ant, you’re not wrong about the colour scheme. MM 230 was a test aeroplane with de Havilland, for a short period. They were testing different types of target indicators. It’s definitely listed as a B IX.
There is only one B IX, as far as I’m concerned, that I would want to model & that’s LR 503. This Mosquito did a record number of sorties for Bomber Command(& for that matter more than any other Allied aircraft), in WW II. The picture is dated 17/04/45, F-bar Freddie went on to complete 213 operational sorties. Not bad for an oversized model aeroplane!

Cheers,
Neilly

Well, whatever it is, it’s a fine looking aircraft. Imagine, two Merlins strapped to some wood!!!

RE: My favourite Mosquito

Without intending to challenge your intimate knowledge of the Mossie Nielly, are you sure this is a bomber and not a recce model? The colour scheme looks suspiciously like PR Blue.Just a thought…
Incidentally,I was wondering what colour schemes you were thinking of your flyable model. Will she be a B or a PR variant?
