We were looking through some old photos yesterday and found a load of old Finningley air show photos my Grandad had taken. I have no idea of the dates but they would be 1983 or earlier.

Going right back to post #1 on this thread, I note that Les Hunt listed in 1972, Meteor “WH456” as actually a repaint of WL168.

I’m almost sure it isn’t ’73, ‘cos I’d be in the VC10/Lightning piccie.
The Lightning was in bare metal scheme too, and I don’t recall a VC10 nearby.
I was on the Lightning starter crew. Well – near the Lightning starter crew, would be more accurate.

Some pics which i think are from Finningley around that time, i still have the programmes for 1974-1975, but they don’t list the static

The pictures of the Swift and Meatbox were definately taken pre Silver Jubilee show in 1977 as the museum on the station had closed by then and all the aircraft had been moved or scrapped. In fact the reason the collection was broken up was because the airfield had to be ‘tided up’ for the Royal Review.
The Shack in the background of the Swift picture is WR977 which was dismantled and moved to Newark. Originally the museum had aquired the Beverley but decided it was to big a job to move and went for the Shack instead (which was going to be scrapped). I think the Argosy went to the dump with the cockpit being converted to a procedure trainer which is now also on dispaly at Newark.
Sadly quite a few aircraft were broken up, including a really nice Javelin which had just been repainted. I know the museum did try and save it but I think it went to the scrapman as compensation for not getting the Shack 🙁

roger you will really enjoy finningley from 1981. It will probably have a vulcan scramble and the first appearance of concorde there too. lucky devil! The best thing for you to do is get it transfered to dvd.
I was there that day, aged 15, my mate and I (we used to cycle there and back best part of 15 miles each way) stood infront of one of the Hanger doors while the Vulcan’s scrambled, my god what a noise, will never forget it have still got the progammes, and it was the first time I was able to get up close to Concorde.
Finningley was always a special airshow for me never missed one from 1978 to the last one in 93 (was it 93 or 94 ?)
Seeing the F3 Lightning from Binbrook display set a course for me in latter life to eventually be lucky enough to become involved in buying and owning two of them ! Small acorn’s and all that 🙂

A Jaguar maybe? and a Victor.
Not to happy to agree with you . But that bar on the tail of the Jag is too distinctive, not present on “tonka”.

I have to disagree! The first two shots were definitely taken at the Silver Jubilee as the VC10 XV106 is recorded as static at that show, whereas the 1975 show was attended by XV102. The Tornado fin is without much doubt that of XZ630/P12 which first flew on 14/03/77. You’re probably right about the others though.
The tonka was XZ630 as seen here, the 25 flypast was flown by JPs of Support
Command. 🙂

We did go to the Jubilee year Finningley, I remember the Red Arrows flying in a “25” formation. The Yeovilton one was cut down from a larger photo and inserted into a small slide frame so it’s possible that there had been more on the original photo. I don’t remember him talking about Yeovilton so I just assumed that the photos were Finningley.
My Grandad had been photographing and flying aircraft before WW2, he was having flying lessons at the time he joined the RAF and worked as ground crew fixing the aircraft, we used to have all his old manuals for different aircraft and tips on flying them, and models all over the place. He died 2 years ago aged 95 but he would have been pleased that people have been able to enjoy his photos on here. He knew about these forums and probably would have liked to come along and read them if I had had my PC then.

They sure were. My first b/w were taken at Farnborough in 1959, and I switched to slides for the Biggin Hill Battle of Britain bash in 1965.

Albert,
Doesn’t it make you feel ancient to read this thread as “grandad’s photos”? Blimey, by 1975 I had already been photographing aeroplanes for 16 years! I think you started about the same time didn’t you?
I was waiting for that issue to come up! 😮 I took my first b/w aircraft photo of a Starways DC-3 at Heathrow during a school trip in 1960 and started serious colour slide shooting in 1966! THOSE were the good old days, eh Steve? 😉

It’s not doing me many favours either…

Well spotted! I was thinking all the Finningly shots were taken on the same day, but we seem to have two different displays here, 1975 or ’76 and 1977.

My best guess is that these were all taken at Finningley on 20 September 1975, as I think the Diables Rouges Magisters gave their last UK display at Mildenhall in July 76. The NA39 Buccaneer is definately outside the Yeovilton Museum, possibly in March 1969, as it was still being prepared in 1968.
