My very own 'made me swear' thread

I was summoned by my divisional head today to be told me and my assistant are being investigated at work for “racist comments”.
We head up a team of 18 Europeans who we referred to as “bl**dy foreighners”. During a walk around to meet the new HR bod, there was some banter, including one of the team (Portuguese by nationality telling me I was the bl**dy foreigner.
HR ladies took offence, nobody among the team has taken it upon themselves to feedback, yet we now have to attend investigations, the outcome of which may be disciplinary action.
20 years of service, 16 managing and leading a multinational, multi cultural team, we have a great team spirit and competition, mickey taking and banter. During the Olympics there were medal tables and jokes etc, yet the HR lady who is not even in the post and the outgoing lady feel compelled to take these steps.
Worst of all, tomorrow I have to advise my assistant as his line manager that it is about to happen, but I won’t be part of his “Process”, so I have to start the dirty work.
So, I swore, I ranted and I don’t mind admitting through a forum, I cried a while as well.

So, I have a written warning under the “general conduct” policy that such behaviour could cause offence. Of the 15 or 16 people present, 4 were interviewed. The two HR bods, and myself and my assistant. So, our word against theirs, and guess who “wins“.

Solicitor says its against ACAS guidelines in terms of the way it was run, but also says if I fight it I will win, but will always loose in the end.

Trying now to see how much crow I can eat to stick it out, so cheesed off in truth I just want to walk….. but in this day and age….

So, I have the “Notes” of the meeting, which generally were OK, some detail incorrect and oh, yes, missing totally the point where I said “If offence was caused then I am sorry for that but it was work place banter” and also where I said “at no point ever, did the two HR professionals say “We need a word, as your HR contact I should say that this is not appropriate”.

I send them back, ask for a timescale to resolve, nothing for 24 hrs so far…..

So, no specific detail given to me on what was “inappropriate” or what caused offence. Not allowed to know who made the “claims”, and the 18 or so staff who joined in the “banter” are not going to be interviewed.

My oppo is on his knees, and just exhausted, I’m asking the questions that the ACAS sites and others suggest, but no answers. I was asked to talk through the events of the day, I asked why and I am not allowed to know.

No clue on when I will see any outcome.

so, I am back on the swearing bit now…..

It wasn’t particularly funny, anyway. But it certainly couldn’t be broadcast today.

Love thy neighbour was forty years ago, were people of the day hankering for a return of good old fascism instead of that watered-down nonsense? Come on, it wasn’t even real.

This appeared in my diary at work this morning. I have asked them to clarify as surely it should say “alleged” and under which policy the investigation is ongoing and what the possible outcomes.

Yes it might be beneficial to dispute every point, even the wording of every sentence.
You might not eventually win but you’ll make life a pain for them.
It’s amazing how you can bog things down in details–the devil is in it–as they say.

it depends on what you class the term “bullying” as though charlie

If it results in the sort of distress Andy descibed then I think the term bullying is applicable. But if the problem is stamped on early enough the mesasage will quickly be understood that it is not tolerated. I think most sensible people know what is bullying and what is teasing banter.

So do I, as far as bullying is concerned, it is unacceptable. But then, as I mentioned earlier, the culprit should be sacked on the spot, no questions asked.

Scarily enough, I do tend to take on some of the points Derek makes.
When I did my apprenticeship at GEC back in the day–there was some really bad bullying.
I’ve seen a grown man (a real grown man–married with a family) reduced to tears by it.

I can’t say I suffered from it terribly, but then again not everyone has my ‘direct’ attitude to things.
One individual did try it on once. He was dealt with and never tried again.
However, I don’t feel a person should be put in the position of having to deal with it to start with–however they may be able to handle themselves. After all, you only go to work to earn a living–unless that is you restore motorbicycles–then it’s more of a religious crusade….:):):)

I wonder why they can’t bring back programs, like Love thy neighbour, Rising Damp, and and Alf Garnet in Till Death do us part.
Every TV set has an On/Off switch.

The “Germans” episode was one of the most popular of the Fawlty Towers series – in Germany!! There is far too much offence taken on behalf of the people who often are not offended at all.

I had a great German friend a few years ago who spent a year based at a NATO(UK) radar station in Germany in his twenties. That year cemented his anglophilia and he loved most of the British comedy shows from the 60s to the early 80s. Long after his service career his boss was an archetypical German and no one sent him up more than my friend. His name was Schiller but he was known as Himmler!!

Rising Damp is aired regularly and it’s still an excellent show with some of the best comic timing you’ll ever see. I wish they’d air Spike Milligan’s Q series again. I doubt we’ll ever see LTN again. Despite Eddie coming off worst and being shown to be a prat, the thought police can’t see past the end of their up-turned noses.

I remember the consternation that arose when Ford (for whom I worked) booked a large, sumptuous conference room at Jaguar’s Castle Bromwich plant for a ‘summit’ conference involving the very senior management from the UK and Germany. I drove our American Chief Engineer up there from Essex and we were the first to arrive (I think he was the instigator) to set up at around 6:30am.

Most of us are aware of Castle Bromwich’s heritage on this forum. Lets just say the room had to be hastily changed from the Lancaster Conference room after I raised concerns over the feelings of our Cologne based VIP’s. Nice room though – lots of great paintings of Lancs in action over Germany…

I wandered over to A. stretch my legs and B. find out what the cause of the uncontainable mirth was – and was gobsmacked to find them watching a DVD of ‘Mind your Language’.

It may offend some but it wasn’t made with that intent. I’m glad that it’s still enjoyed for what it is – by people of all colours and creeds – it’s one in the eye for the PC brigade.

Good luck with your proceedings.

I’m old enough to remember “Love They Neighbour”, maybe with 20/20 hindsight and reflection but I always remember Eddie Booth being a prat and loosing out because of his attitudes BUT, thats from what, 35 years ago so please don’t take that as any scientific study of the show which I don’t think has aired since,
