My visit to Moscow – and Flying Legends

I recently visited Moscow for an aerobatics display at Zhukovsky and the Flying Legends show at Monino.

We also visited Domodedovo, Vnukovo, Chornoye, Victory Park & Khodynka.

My photos and a short description about the visit are at :- http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/models_pages/moscow_2004.html

It is heavily photo intensive – so apologies to anyone with a slow connection…….

Here are a few of the photos for tasters….

It was wheeled out of the museum and taken to Domodedovo for a show on 9 July 1967.

Indeed, I know the photo. It was on there from at least 2000, I’ll take a punt here and say it may have been applied when Kozhedub passed away in 1991?

Some interesting reading by Eric Pilawskii The Misadventures of Ivan Kozhedub’s Famous “White 27”.

Well worth a read but if you wish to skip to the conclusions it is quite a mystery and possibly might not even be the original machine 🙁

Amazing trip even with the rain!

Interesting question about the wreath on Kozhedub’s machine, any more news on that?

I understand that it is not “Lavochkin La-7 in the markings of Soviet ace Ivan Kozhedub” but the La-7 as flown by Kozhedub.

As the last wartime aircraft flown by the highest scoring ace in the allied forces in WWII that particular airframe is as historically significant as the Enola Gay. Would have been quite amazing to see it like that.

You’re right Hamtech – I hadn’t appreciated it before…..

There are a couple of B&W photos on page 83 of Yefim Gordon’s ‘Lavochkin’s Piston Engined Fighters’ – Red Stars Vol 10.

It was wheeled out of the museum and taken to Domodedovo for a show on 9 July 1967.

In these photos however, it has the 62 kill markings and 3 HOS medals – but no ‘wreath’ ??

It’s a replica Ilyushin Il-4 Bomber – developed from the DB-3 :-

good report Ken, I did a trip to Russia last year (with another company) and had similar weather ! – although the MAKS show at Zhukovsky was a sunny day.
Chernoye is very interesting – loads of AN2 & Mil2 awaiting overhaul. Shame to hear that the AN2 ekranoplane is in storage there – it raised a few comments when it was at the 2003 show

Thanks,

Copied to the Historic forum, for all the Piston People. Besides, there’s more Flying Legends than just Flying Legends 😉

I’m getting this message for the first picture

“The file /C:/web-images/moscow_2004_files/day01_01.jpg cannot be found. Please check the location and try again.”

If it works for you I’ll try a refresh. Good pictures – thanks for sharing.

Oooops!!

My mistake – I hadn’t ticked the ‘relative url’ box when importing the photos – so it worked for me ‘cos it was looking at my directory – but not for you.

Should be OK now.

Thanks.

You may want to check the links on this page

http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/models_pages/mos2004_day01.html

seems to be broken html links on that one. The rest of the pages are ok.

It’s working OK for me – I have re-checked and purged my cache, still OK.
