Brilliant museum and amazing staff. I accidentally left my keys in the cafe (not sure how?), but the curator posted them back to me. On another visit I missed the last bus back to Newark and another member of staff offered me a lift. Now you don’t get that level of service at Cosford or Duxford, but you do at Elvington, which is another museum whose level of service extended to giving me a lift into York, and very much appreciated it was too.

LOL, It wasn’t too hard just had to think of a type at Newark with a dayglo nose and isn’t too familiar in the UK – where do I pick up my years free entry ticket!:D

PS, I concur with previous comments, a brilliant and varied place to visit, and the staff (inc Howard!) are very helpful.

No problem T-21 always pleased to try and be of assistance. 🙂

Correct pagen! (and the others – boy you’re all fast this afternoon) 😮

Scott – the aircraft you’re referring to is the Saab Safir, which interestingly was my first ‘successful import’ back in 1982 from Vaernes Flykstajon near Trondheim in north western Norway. Perhaps the nearest NAM has to a realistic chance of having a flyer in the collection. It was briefly on the UK register with the intention of doing airshows back in the 1980s!!

Saab Safir.

And I’d just like to add to the comments about Newark. I’ve only been there once – just a couple of years ago – but it’s a museum with a great variety of airframes and well worth visiting.

(P.S. beaten to it by Pagen01! I should type faster)

Many thanks to Twin otter and others for the help. Its amazing that we all look at aircraft photographs and often miss certain aerials and their purpose even authors.

I have a feeling that the ILS suggestion actually came from my ‘avionics info source’ – but I’ll need to re-check that tomorrow.

I like your ILS suggestion on that thread, strange how these don’t show up on anything else though, I wonder if they were also used to ‘check’ facilities on Bomber and Transport Command airfields before the days of Argosy Es etc?

I’ve just had a quick look in Tim Senior’s excellent Hastings book that was published by Dalrymple & Verdun and whilst the aerials are pictured sadly they haven’t been referenced!

 We have been down the Hastings aerial question route before (T-21 asked last time out as well) and it seems as though it wasn’t resolved http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=96055&highlight=Hastings+aerial

On the HP Hastings photograph can anybody tell what the wavy aerials are between the fuselage and inner engines ?? Thanks

I can’t view these pics at the mo, but do you mean the three stubby aerials connected by a yellow wire under the leading edges?
They are interesting as they don’t seem to appear on the other two preserved T.5s but they do on Duxfords’ C.1A, suggesting it isn’t Vulcan related.
In service shots only show that a few (only a couple of T.5s) Hastings had them fitted.

No problem Mondariz, but we’re not known for hiding our ‘light under a bushel!’ 😀 Glad we’ve got a potential new visitor. 🙂

A Lynx flown in would be nice. We did investigate that possibility for the Draken but it ended up being flown in to RAF Scampton, deactivated, outer wing sections removed and then moved to Winthorpe by road as a wide load.

T-21 – not sure about the Hastings aerials; possibly connected to the Vulcan radar fit carried on the T5’s. My ‘avionics info source’ at the museum is on leave today but I will try and check up tomorrow.

Good to report that the Hastings ‘clean-down’ continues to reach those parts that normal cleaning programmes cannot reach!! 😀

Hi Twinotter,

Wow, it’s a lot bigger than I initially thought. Now I see the pictures of the outside exhibition, I do recognize it from somewhere. Being from Denmark, most of my aircraft museum visits are via Google Earth, but Newark is now on my list for the next trip to the UK.

RDAF/Navy are getting rid of their Lynx helicopters in a few years, so you might want to revisit Karup soon 😀

Some nice pictures there Scott – they look familiar!! 😀

There’s a full list here Mondariz http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/aircraft_list.html the Draken was one of my efforts from Karup! 😉
