The only one I thought was on a downward spiral was and I hate to say it because people will jump down my throat…… The Starfighter, I know she has had work done on her and has been primed in places, but from an Aircraft Engineers point of view, Exfoliation corrosion can not be partially treated and protected, you need to remove it all, and then you have a chance….. a quick treat and cover will not help and im my ( and I will get flamed for this) opinion it is on a rocky downward spiral .

yep the Starfighter has been on a downward spiral for some time, she came to Bruntingthorpe last year after many years of external storage by her previous owners, she will require a some work but i have heard that this airframe may be for sale hence a full restoration could be on hold.

The starfighter is being wee looked after from what I have read.. It was mentioned that the rear fuselage has to be replaced before she can be restored into a “runner”

Cool, Odd thing we had a good wing propped up against the crewroom wall in W Gerrmany on 20 Sqn Jags that we aquired, the other one was aquired by a German Sqn and was the last time I saw it many many moons ago being used as a Barbeque table outside the German bar at the Italian Airforce base in Decimamanu Sardinia.

Keith, here is the missing ” T ” 🙂

TonyT. Thank you ! so nice to hear you very sensible answers to the problems that are involved with keeping aluminium in outside storage for years, I am sure you will not get ‘flamed’ for your opinion, others may question it ? but is that not what forum are based upon ???
On a funny side I have never and will never, to quote your last post.“Keith, not a problem posing in my thread, glad you did, 🙂

Keith, not a problem posing in my thread, glad you did, what people have to realise is as with photgraphy you often “push” the image these days to get your desired effect, of which I have, yes she has corrosion on her but from an engineers point of view a lot of flying metal warbirds are painted silver, that way they look correct, but are safe…… and looking at the corrosion, she is not that bad
(visible)

Pheonix Reborn. I feel I must agree with bamel, whilst TonyT’s photo is supurb as a photo, so sharp ! (more weather related than aircraft) It is an artistic photo ! therefore not a study of the airframe, or its condition ! If, as I assume, this is one of the batch of aircraft flown into Sculthorpe during 1977 / 1978, and has very possibly been in outside storage since ! then I think it remains in very good condition ! May I also stress that weather conditions always affect the outcome of every photo ??? Being very rude I would like to post (hope you don’t mind TonyT ?) my photo of same aircraft from earlier this year, in sunshine, and looking a little different ???
Please have a little compassion for all of the people at Bruntingthorpe who struggle against overwhelming odds to allow us to see such things of beauty in 2009 and beyond !

Keith.

Great photo, but I am not sure what looks worse, the weather or the state of the airframe, there seems to be a general impresion of things being let go at Bruntingthorpe these days, a sad situation.

Dear Phoenix aviation Reborn,

This is indeed a very atmospheric photo but i can assure you that nothihg at Bruntingthorpe is being” let go”,

Many groups and individuals are doing some great work to keep the many airframes in good condition, and there are not many places where so many of the airfames on display are live and taxyable,
