Dear All – just to let you know that the canopy was offered up against a Scimi frame at the weekend and has been confirmed as Scimitar – it has been passed on to help a cockpit section

Bravo! Always nice when a part finds a new home on an airframe.

Many thanks to all who contributed – if it hadnt been for the forum we wouldnt have known what it was and it wouldnt have found a home (and there would be a Scimi without a ‘lid’!)

All the best

The Provost did have the famous Percival hingeing panel to allow access behind the instruments . The inevitable happened on one occasion in the 50’s when one swung open on climb out, locking behind the control column and causing a consequent stall and pilot fatality.

Nope, neither of those……… ๐Ÿ˜‰

Provost (apparently) has two panels that swing out for access. And the mystery one is slightly deeper and not as wide compared to a JayPee 3, and yet has holes for wing tanks selection

Actually TT i’m only jealous at the amount of help. Perhaps the combined might of the forum can’t identify this mystery RAF panel then ?

Very roughly , from a small GA, it comes out a bit over six foot in length for a Scimitar canopy.

Was it one of the pile of canopies (at least a dozen) of very similar looking ones which was at the Flowers scrap yard in Chippenham?

I remember one had the word โ€œScimitarโ€ written on it in faint chinagraph.

You beat me to it! A friend of mine was spitting feathers (quite rightly) when he sent a friend of his along in his absence to the auction of items from Flowers’ scrapyard in Chippenham having been tipped off about Scimitar canopies. When I was editing (sorry, completely re-writing!!) The Scimitar File for Air-Britain I put this anecdote in. By all accounts there were a handful of them all still in their waxed paper and they were all bought by some numpty of a “designer” who wanted to turn them into chairs!! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
This guy wouldn’t even part with one of them for cash.

So maybe one of them has come to light after all?

I think its from a Scimitar.

I think its from a Scimitar, subject to confirmation of dimensions.

Supermarine Swift? Although, from memory, there is a kind of “stepped” side, although that may just be in the framing. Andy Saunders (edit: doh!! Only just seen the previous couple of posts!)
