Mystery compass

I was ask to identify this compass today, my feeling is it pre war or possibly non military I havent seen one before, can anyone enlighten me? trying to get some more pics sent over so i will add them when they arrive.

Hi have seen very similar units in armoured cars/tanks.

I was told it was recovered from the English channel by the chaps Grandad although from the condition it seems unlikely.
