Mystery Engine

Can any one identify the engine in the photographs?

I believe that this is a Clerget 9BF from the anotation on the photograph. This looks more traditional Clerget with the inlets behind the cylinders. The cylinders appear to be one piece and made of steel.

Clerget 9Bf ?

made by Gwynnes Ltd , 1,750 produced with longer stroke and bore to give 140 hp, also made by Rushton and proctor of Lincoln

Just a guess from the code from the photo?

Thanks for the Wiki reference, having looked around there appear to be a selection of ‘Clerget 9’ engines on the web.

I agree that the Lincolnshire one looks the same as the one in the photograph but there should be a letter after the 9? Any idea where it was made and how it has been identified as a Clerget? Any thoughts when it was made? Why does it only have one magneto, is it an early engine? The inlet manifolds look more Bentley than Clerget?

More questions!!

Same as the one on Wiki….. Clerget 9 if the filename is to be believed….

Apparently the one on Wiki is the example at the Museum of Lincolnshire – it was locally built, so there could be differences between that and the original design.

I’m not completely convinced that it’s a Clerget.
I’m not certain what it is yet but what throws me is the flanged joint in the induction pipes near the top of the cylinders.

I think it might be foreign–well yes I know all rotaries were apart from the Bentley sort, but I mean German maybe…?

Andy.

My initial thoughts too; but did Clerget design an engine which had what looks like steel heads and aluminium muffs on the cylinders? If so what model number did it have?
