Mystery Fin

Does anyone recognise what this fin is from? Before anyone says it, the underside is earth/green camouflage as well, so it won’t be a horizontal stabiliser.

I thought it might perhaps be from a Hampden, but the shape at the top doesn’t seem to be quite right for that. Bear in mind that the photo is not taken completely square on, so the angle of the curve appears slightly steeper than it is in reality.

You guys enjoy a challenge, so I look forward to seeing what you can come up with.

Its also had 70 odd years being kicked around hangars and sheds and god knows where else so I would assume plenty of time to get a bit beaten up.

You might be able to narrow down the timeframe if it is a crashed aircraft? Hudsons stopped wearing the Dark Earth/Dark Green camo at some point, and the amount of white on the remains of the fin flash suggest the pre-1942 “A” type roundels.

Of course, as Merlin3945 pointed out, it’s not necessarily from a crash! It does look rather bent and mangled though…

Thanks for all the replies guys – it’s great to get the identity of this tied down, but a shame I’ll never know which wreck it came from.

It doesn’t necessarily need to be from a crashed aircraft. It could of been from a damaged but in for repair aircraft at the Cunliffe Owen factory at Macmerry.

But if it was from a crashed Hudson in Scotland there are so many to choose from.

Is it possible that there is a serial number stamped somewhere either on or in the fin. Not that I am suggesting getting the tin snips out.

Thanks guys for all the information. It’s pretty conclusive and I guess it is indeeed from a Hudson. I assume it is from one that crashed in Scotland – I only wish I knew which one!

Looks like like it has the remains of a de-ice rubber boot, might help identify the type it was from.

Also the positioning of the pre-1942 fin flash at the bottom, and the prominent reinforcing strip seem to match Hudson!

The large hinge cutout looks similiar to a Hudson tin Triangle. I thought Hampden to at first.

Wild guess: Lockheed Hudson?

Something for scale might help though!
