dark light

Mystery hatch?

Can anyone ID this hatch?

All wood construction, hollow and has two simple looped metal brackets on opposite corners.

The dimensions of the oval area covered by the discoloured yellow fabric is approximately 11 1/2″ x 13″ lg.

Yep, good ole George!

I never heard about a Mossie flying from Georges. Do you know where it went?

Here are three from my collection……

Hello Mike, yes good ole George, I have some pix of his Crane “airforce’ before he chopped em all up, as you, know he scrapped Catalinas, B-24s, Cranes, he did have a couple of Annies and of course 2 Mossies, one of which was flown out when sold, he was famous for his “houseboat” Catalinas, do you remember them? by the numbers of Cranes he scrapped thats where my money would be, some sort of temporary plug for whatever( escape hatch window, camera, etc) nice piece with some provenance Mike, cheers Darrell

Seems a bit small to be a window plug. I’m wondering if it a local modification to replace a flare chute?

Best wishes

Hi Darrell,

The construction is not at all symmetrical.

My father picked up this piece at the Ventress farm. I could have been with him when he found it, but can’t remember as I was quite young!

Mike, where abouts did you retrieve from? I suspected Crane, but Anson windows are similar in shape and cold be cold weather “fill”, for leaky window, what has thrown me off a little , the construction appears not symetrical? and hole portion has fabric so served a purpose. As far as Spartan Air Service and Kenting, spare Mossie parts were painted with a white slash about 1″ to 2″ long for identification because they used a variety of ex warbirds including Anson, but their planes were painted silver with red trim, I have an Anson parts book will have a boo, thanks Darrell ps were they from the Ventris estate?

Guys, thanks for your help!

I guess that Mosquito bits and yellow fabric don’t quite jive.

It’s possible that it could be from a Crane or Anson as those types were also found near by.

Some possible Canuckian W.W.II types that had yellow:

Yale / Harvard
Lysander
Battle
Bolly
Crane
Fleet(s)
Shark

If you get back to 30s types in W.W.II service, it’s a longer list…

It was found in Canada near the remnants of a an airframe believed to be a Mossie.

Doh!…Mosquito would have been my second guess.

I should have looked at your location. Not many Horsa in Canada.

From the photos it looks like it is noticeably curved in two directions.

That would tend to place it near the tail or (more likely) to nose of an aircraft.

A camera port sounds very plausible.

Mystery Hatch

Since it is felt that it belongs to a Mossie and was found in Canada near remains of possible Mossie I wonder if it could have been a Spartan Air Photo bird and then this cover may have been a filler for the Camera opening when not in use. Any way just a guess based on what has been said and shown so far.

Obviously meant as a bung for some fuselage opening meant possibly to sit flush with the outer skin once inplace with spring retaining clips and I would hazzard a guess that the holes are for removal, nothing came of a search on the serial number though, bit of an oddity this one.

I did peak in through one corner and didn’t see anything. It’s completely hollow and weighs next to nothing. The two holes are probably finger holes to lift out and replace the panel.

An oval opening would be all that’s visible from the aircraft exterior and it could only be removed from inside the aircraft.

It was found in Canada near the remnants of a an airframe believed to be a Mossie.

Just a guess…but could it be from a Horsa glider?

It’s wooden, would plug an oval window or escape hatch (or is it too small), and the construction looks a bit ‘cheap and cheerful’.

thanks….

I forgot about that number;)

Just an idea on the pic that is looking at the underside, have you tried unscrewing the 4 screws inside for a look inside it as those 2 holes are a curiosity.

No window, the oval section is covered in fabric.

Any ideas?
