Mystery Hurricane & Pilot

Whilst sorting out images for a book project, this emerged from a box of photos of Hurricane pilots. Unfortunately, there is no caption to the reverse and I have had it so long I forget the details!

Can anyone recognise the chap on the left (I assume the officer on the right is the Intelligence Officer) but I think it MAY be 238, 504 or 601 Squadron. Almost certainly 1940. A clue may be the name ‘AITCH’ under the chin of the cowling.

Well done Iain,
I have a photo of Hunt in a group shot taken in 1940. He has a moustache in that picture so I would never have linked him with this picture.
At least I was right about the ‘Aitch’ ;0)

Just another thought on the AITCH

This could be a Gift of War name as there was a Spitfire named AITCH AITCH (R7259)

Just another avenue to look at

My guess is Ron Smythe of 111 and 249 squadron.
Gerry

Pretty sure it’s not Ron, never seen that photo in any album of his, doesn’t really resemble him. I could always ask him if he knows anything about the photo if you want.

Are the white flying overalls a hint that it could be the Auxiliaries of (in this case) 601 sq?

The officer certainly has a badge on his jacket that would be about right for the “A” used by the Auxiliaries

Could the AITCH be a shortened version of the surname AITCHISON ?

My thought exactly. Possibly Flying Officer Alexander Aitchison of 247 Squadron? They flew Hurricanes from 1941 – March 43 with code HP- .

Hi Andy,

My guess is Ron Smythe of 111 and 249 squadron.

Also I think that the ‘Aitch’ is a pun on the aircraft’s letter ‘H’.

Can’t be sure though.
