Here’s a mystery pic.
What
where and any other info?
Clues.
Yes, it’s the right way up
Yes, it’s from the http://www.BritishPathe.com website (Credit where due) and the interesting bit is it’s PRE-W.W.II and it’s NOT American…
Think of British a/c manufacturers
Have fun!

Lockheed Connie
Hi JDK,
Well lets see how well I do at this game sorry about not jumping in sooner.
Its the Wind-Tunnel Test for the Fairey F.C.1, the plane never came do to the War. One of the many rummors about Howard Hughs Connie design is that an Ex-Fairey designer showed Howard a rought copy of the plane and Howard the took the basic design kept the Wing redisign the Nose and add a third tail.
So how did I do? 😮 😀
Oh by the way I saw previews for the new Howard Hughs flic it looks like its going to be a good one. 😉
Cheers Crazymainer

guess thats means it was the constellation then. Went to Lockheed and triple vetical stabilizers ………………..

Good looking aircraft with what appear to be twin or triple vertical stabilizers. The fuselage appears to be a bit wider than standard for the time.

Well done Jim.
Fraid there’s no points though, as I’d basically said which aircraft it was… However, what American a/c was it like and why?

Fairey F.C.1
designed 1938-39 four Bristol taurus engines, or wright cyclones for export

I am VERY disapointed.
Very, very.
It’s an airliner design. It’s in a Fairey windtunnel. Gee. I wonder which manufacturer designed it? The books recently discussed (the one featuring the correct designer) will give the answer.
The interesting bit is what American airliner is it like? How and why?
Go…

Not bad Melv, but the Special Branch still have a few questions for you. Something about Diana?
Try ‘envelope sent from Fairey’s to Lockheed by mistake’. There’s a VERY interesting story here. I mean, how many four engine airliners were intened to take EITHER nose or tailwheel setups?
Cheers!
The only one I can think of at the moment is Handley Page Hastings/Hermes

Not in this case Melv, there were good reasons for each layout – hence the proposal.
Still no bids? Poor, very poor. I would have thought Papa Lima would have been in here at least!

Only those where the designer couldn’t be bothered to work out the c of g!

So, I reckon it is the original design for the DC6 that was done at Fairey’s and sent over to Seattle by mistake in an envelope marked “Miles M52 – do not give to Bell.”
Redeem myself?
Never.

Hiscock, can you redeem yourself?
Be serious. With my past?

I don’t think they’re stumped James, just being too busy digging through books to reply I guess! 😀
Anyway, all my guesses where shot down in the first few posts, so I’ll leave it to the experts now……………………………. come on….. anyone????
By: JDK - 20th August 2004 at 16:39
Hi Martin,
Nope.
Clue. It’s an airliner (and having checked my refs, a VERY interesting might-have-been!)
John,
If you’ve got a pop-up killer that might be the problem. A fellow forumite had problems due to his Norton anti virus settings; switching them off and trying the site may be worth a go – remember to turn them on again!
Cheers
Chiz. If it isn’t a Spitfire or Mustang, is everybode stumped?

hi james,
how do you get the images to come up on the pathe site, all i get are the numbers.

could this be a design study for Specification B.12/36 ?

*BUMP*
So – any guesses as to the aircraft in the wind tunnel?
Cheers..

So, Sir Richard Fairey on the far right of the first pic, and far left of the second, and in the second indicating to the politico that the model is the thing on strings.
So extra points as to the details of the proposed aircraft that the model is of…
Hiscock, can you redeem yourself?
