At it’s peak the Dan Air 748 fleet had 21 aircraft. Towards the end they were based at ABZ and NCL. I volunteered to go onto the 748 when one was due to come to LGW for a short term basing, but that was cancelled so I never did get to fly on it. Shame.

I dont think the RAF operate any at all anymore,

I think they operate two at Boscombe Down but they are operated by QinetiQ/ETPS.

Here is a recent shot of an Andover at Boscombe Down http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0997286/L/

I ve been on an Hawker Siddeley HS-748 Srs2A/266 my Uncle works at Emerald Airways 😀 .What airforce still operates the HS-748? I know the RAF still fly some Hawker Siddeley HS-780 Andover C1 at EGDM.

James

I dont think the RAF operate any at all anymore, but there are loads around in Canada, and throughout the 3rd world. The Brasilian AF and Thai AF seem to be the biggest military operators of the type still these days.

To think HM QE II used to be flown around in an Andover!

ABZ had loads of 748s too, BA & Danair, mainly to Shetland.

At peak, Danair flew something like 17 daily flights M-F to Sumburgh on oil charters!

Hardy a/c the Budgie…could fly in conditions which precluded its successor, the awful ATP.

Ah, the good old days!!

And a ‘kneeling’ undercarriage IIRC

Here’s a nice looking one, also a BA ‘Budgie’ at Glasgow back in the good old days.

They were the ‘regional jet’ of their day, ten a penny wherever you looked. Glasgow Airport used to be full of BA and Dan Air examples back in the 70’s and 80’s…

Incidentally, didn’t Charles and Di head off on honeymoon in a Queen’s Flight 748 after their wedding ? And isn’t the Andover a slightly longer version with a Hercules style diagonally sloping rear fuselage with a cargo ramp ?

Yes the Andover was slightly longer, and also the rear bogies could be lowered so that it ‘knelt’ to allow a lower loading deck level.

You know you’re getting on in years when younger forum members don’t recognize a 748!!

Andover was basically a militarised HS748.

Gosh, how the world has changed. 748s used to be common as muck at regional airports.
