Mystery prop job just went overhead

About 30/35 mins ago I am pretty sure that an prop-driven heavy went overhead on what is normally a transatlantic route heading @ i think about 15k height. I was approx 30 miles north of Dublin at the time .

I have posted something on the commercial forum for advice on how it might be traced But just thinking that it sounded fairly old. Anyone know if there is a historic 2 or 4 engined prop job heading towards the states tonight?

It sure sounded nice on a clear noiseless night !

Those episodes of Ice Pilots were filmed last summer.

“she sure was naking a hard job of getting were she was going !”

This has just reminded me of something I heared over here (East Yorkshire) this afternoon. i never saw it, but wondered if it may have been a Russian caro aircraft.

It could have been an Electra mail flight.

Maybe, just Maybe the Electra purchased by Buffalo Air from Atlantic Air headed for Yellowknife. Apparently this weeks Ice Pilots has some more on this aircraft being prepared for the ferry flight. At least thats what the TV guide shows for here in Canada.

Try looking for a flight number beginning with RR or Ascot. That would denote air trooping flights though if it was a cargo flight I can’t offer any similar suggestions.

With the exception of some aeromed and JGN (if they are still running) all RAF C130 callsigns (freight or pax) with four figures after Ascot/RR are either 4 or 5 depending on the mark of aircraft so Ascot 4xxx would be a Mk1 or 5 and Ascot 5xxx would be a stretch (3 or 4). If it is a 3 figure number after Ascot it is a UK internal flight.

If memory serves 2xxx is VC10, 3xxx TriStar/C17 and 1 is 32 (TR), but I am more than happy to be corrected there, as I was never shiney fleet.

Mention made of Lockheed Hercules or Lockheed Electra.

I’ve never heard these two types together – I wonder how similar they sound?? Perhaps an idea for an airshow organiser to put a demo of the two together.

Think you could be right about it being a Herc, I had a look at Radarvirtual ( great site thanks for the link !! ) , there is nothing showing on it that would seem to fit. I presume if she was a Military flight she wouldnt be shown so probably a Herc heading stateside?

Thanks for the replies folks ! As always this place does not disappoint when it come to provision of knowledge !

Will keep an eye open for slow flying, noisy broomsticks but fortunately there are few clothes or shoe shops with a flight path close to here !!:diablo:

Well, whatever.

Remember that the free online radar sites don’t show all aircraft – most of the smaller airlines don’t show up.

My guess would be a Russian turbo-prop transport, An12’s and the like make one hell of a growl. A couple of times I’ve looked up expecting a DC4 or B17 etc, and lo and behold it’s turned out to be an Antonov.

Air Atlantique still fly old propliners on night time cargo runs….

I guess you mean Atlantic Airlines. The DC-6s are now looked after as part of Air Atlantique’s Classic Flight and retained at their Airbase heritage facility at Coventry – one is now a static restaurant (DC 6 Diner) the other in Eagle scheme is retained in taxiable condition.

The Electras are no longer operated by Air Atlantique and the few that remain active are with Atlantic Airlines which is a separate organisation and is now linked to a Swedish organisation which also flies ATPs.

Well, My missus test flew her broom after maintenance this evening. She told me she had made it all the way down to LHR via RATSU and routed home via BEL. It is quite conceivable you heard hear pass above. Her maintenance write up after landing was that it made a hard laboring noise when in the climb. According to her flight profile she should have been making a step climb from FL090 to FL150 at approximately your position. Regarding the noise in the climb, I´ve told her that was because she had put on some pounds – but she still insist I´m a fo*king asshole, as there is nothing wrong with her, it is just the bloody broom! She now has her maintenance people applying for an extended Take off weight STC with increased thrust.

Thanks Ben , will give a look at those sites.

Not sure if she was a turbo prop, she sure didnt sound anything like the inter-city jobs we see here flying from Belfast to Dublin, It may have been a Herc but she sure was making a hard job of getting where she was going !

Had hoped it might be something really exotic like a DC6 or 7 !! All i could see was her anti-collision lights when she was a good bit away.

At a guess, it was a Herc. Did it sound like a turbo prop ?

Plane plotter is your best bet, but you have to pay. (and extra for military) http://www.coaa.co.uk/planeplotter.htm

Radar Virtuel is not bad for a quick look http://www.radarvirtuel.com/
