Mystery Sea Hawk

On Saturday 8th November I collected my 2nd cockpit restoration project a Sea Hawk from near Bath. Data plate found on the frame shows built as a 4 but no construction number. Almost all the original paint has been stripped but there is grey beneath the top cover of red on the port side. Also on the port side is painted Wales Aircraft Museum. The keeper of the last 20 years assured me that the aircraft came from them. Tracking through W&R WAM had 2 Sea Hawks WV795 now at Dunsfold and WV826 now in Malta, both complete as far as I know. In early W&R WV795 is quoted as nose only. Can any one help pin down which aeroplane I have. I did visit WAM a couple of times in the late 1980’s but the pictures I have found show a complete aircraft.

Aaaachhhh !!! LOL Thanks Jon 😀

Firebex,
Great info,– best of luck with operation and yes, please ask more when you next get out to Malta, amazing what can turn -up. Wonder if the wrecked Sea- Hawk was pulled out of the sea ??

Bill T.

Thanks sorry Ray had not told me it had been cleared it was full of all sorts including 3 Hastings,a Canberra, remains of a Boston and a Stuka and bits of another Spitfire and that was on top of the pile !!!!!.The Sea Hawk was on top of another I dont think she was in the sea as she had evidence of a fire and fire practice with axes I think she must have come off the Dump at Hal Far when the Royal Navy moved out and the Americans moved in.Hope to get over later in the year again for an update so will try and track down with Ray if the stuff got melted or was it moved to another Yard ??

Before folk get too excited Mike tipped me off about this yard earlier in the year, so I contacted Ray Polidano at the museum and the reply was –

“Very sorry to report that the named scrapyard, that has been like a time warp for decades, has now been cleared of all the material in it.”

Oh well……… 🙁

Now back to panicking about getting 838 ready for this weekend!!

Just to throw another Sea Hawk hat into the ring I have been involed for many year sin fact from the start with the Malta aviation museum .
As you are probably aware we have one of Nev Martins ex Sea Hawks over at Taqali.
But what you may not know is in one o our gold mine scrap yards over there we also have the reamains of another Sea Hawk very badly hacked about.
We think she came from the Dump at Hal Far in the 1960’s as the yard has been a time capsule since basicaly late 1960’s very early 1970.The fuselage whats left of it is in two parts including the cockpit, she has been axed just behind the pilots seat position and has been well guttted out.
BUT from memory there are /where a pair of wings a bit battered standing up in a corner.
I was due to be going back over this month but sadly a meeting with a surgeon and a scalple is going to delay that somewhat.
Does anyone know the likely ID of this aircraft and woudl you like me to ask the guys next time they are going in there(not often these days)to have a look at the wings and see if they are Sea Hawk,

Mystery Sea- Hawk C/pit

One year on from (Stacey’s) last post, here on this thread. Would like to resurrect thoughts, idea’s-memories on this continuing puzzle (and learn of state of WV-795 )

With C/pit Fest, Newark just 2 days away, Grahams mystery C/pit will be there again, along with his Ex-Black Arrows Hunter C/pit, so any help with identification is eagerly awaited. All potential bearers of good info tidings please line -up outside Mystery C/pit to listen to the North West Contingent making Engine start noises mostly down the Cannon bays, Saturday evenings being best time. lol ——–:D:D:D

Must admit, I never thought about the C/pit being an Ex-Dutch One, that would complicate the mod plates and data plates info. and you would still have to track back somehow to find Sea- Hawks original build Serial Number. But keep hunting for us folks, good men have tried and are still doing so.

Hope to see many of you at Newark this W/end.

I know that at some stage after it arrived at brunty it was shipped out for a re-paint somewhere and this might possible be prep for a re-spray as later photos at brunty show it in a basic Extra dark sea grey / white effort ???

Thanks Stacey24b see you there. Under the brush applied red there is a navel scheme dk grey upper pale under and black step guides. Two panels in a box of bits have WV795 written on them , I found themlast night when looking for bits to hang on for Newark. Jon can you mail me the jpeg, I have a couple of shots taken by Alan Curry but he was focused on the Swift. Stick may have been taken out as the large alloy casting at the base was shot and needs re making.

cheers Sparky.

If the nose was swapped it was long before Bob ever got it in the early 80’s.

I have a picture showing 795 being delivered to Bob’s house and the “Wales Aircraft Museum” legend on your cockpit isnt there. Also another shot of the cockpit showing that the control stick had been hacked out which again isnt the case in yours.

Just when I thought this had gone quiet. Thanks for keeping this in mind. Do you know which end was which. The screens on my cockpit look very clean like the ones in your picture. Was a back grafted onto 795 cockpit or is it the other way around. Any chance you would e mail the jpegs for a closer look. aeroplanecol@aol.com if you can. Will you be at Newark this week end I am fetching the Sea Hawk across.

See the latest add on for scrapyard photo’s i’ve uploaded ones of the brunty lot transiting through for reference they are WV795, WV838, WV906, XE327 and XE368 so the spares that are here could have been of any one of them but i would imagine that as 838 left in pieces they are off her

Thanks for that Anon. Is there any one out there who had dealings with WAM that can shed any light on how things went down regarding the Sea Hawk population at Rhoose verbal or pictorial? Almost at the other end of the country can any one have a close look at WV795 and see if there is any sign of the nose ever having been removed, is there an ID plate either on the shell ejector just before the fuselage centre section joint or in the front wheel well. Apologies for being a pain but I would like to pin her down and there will be someone out there who knows the ins and outs just need to establish contact. Whilst on the theme any one from Culdrose days who remembers details from the era when the Sea Haks came out or has pictures?

Thanks Sparky.

Mystery Sea Hawk

Thanks to Mike and Peter Rolfe for a copy of data from Sturtivants FAA Fixed Wing Aircraft since 1946I thought I had the answer to which aircraft my cockpit came from. On page 433 ‘ WAM Cardiff Airport by road 9.78 nose only being displayed. Tracking back through Wrecks and Relics from the 5th ed all the dates seem to tie up until 9th ed when Alan Curry had a picture on p176 of WV795 complete with a nose. Is it likely 795 could have had a nose transplant at Culdrose, where she was listed as being a spares source for the flying WV908. Or did WAM get 2 noses from Culdrose as the same time as the airframe for 795 was purchased. Its still a mystery.

As sure as I can be given that the plates located are written in English as are the mod references, and that she has been locked away for 20 years near Bath. The little paint left on is also looking as if its an RN scheme. There are a couple of photobucket links posted earlier with pictures. Any help gratefully received in pinning this one down. Somebody must have a memory of, or recall the movements associated with the Sea Hawk Preservation Society during the late 70’s and early 80’s.

In hope, regards Sparky.

Still on the look out for cockpit fittings mainly rear bulkhead behind the seat for XE584 also require the 2 outer blast tubes.

The Dutch Royal Navy did aquire 34 Seahawks. They only used 22 of them.
The ones not used were used for spares recovery. After their service life in the Netherlands most of the planes were returned to the UK and some time later some of those ended up in Germany.

The paintscheme of Dutch Seahawks was basicly the same as the RN ones, and the stencils were also in english.

Well hello……………..

Since you all seem very familiar with cockpit layouts…here’s a question…

In the TV series “Red Dwarf”…the flight deck is furnished with two ejector seats…..

What are they from……?

These seats changed to what looks like later models as the series progressed…

There will be a prize for the correct answer…

OT I know but I can’t resist.

They were Mk.4H seats from a Hunter trainer.
