Hi,
Does anyone have any ideas what this windscreen might be from? It is 402mm wide at the base, and 455mm tall. The glass is 20mm thick.
If it helps, it is slightly too wide but several inches too short to be Beaufighter, and is much too wide and tall to be Spitfire. The RAF Museum couldn’t find a match either, so it might be it’s not an RAF type and perhaps FAA, but I can’t guarantee this.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Cees,
Sorry, I can’t see anything on a Avenger dorsal turret that looks like this. Do you have a picture you could post to show what you mean?

Armoured glass as used in the Avengers dorsal turret? Perhaps conversion of those for the FAA?

Robert,
Thanks. Funnily enough, this was one of the earliest ones I thought of, but thanks to the RAF Museum I’ve been able to rule it out. Would’ve been very nice if they were Welkin windscreens!

How about a Westland Welkin.
:dev2:
You will need a complete one to check it against.

Phil,
‘Fraid not. I’ve checked against the cockpit frame and it is a very different shape and size.

Hi there,
Could it not be a Bristol Beaufighter front windscreen as they were based at East Fortune in East Lothian and it looks to be about the correct shape and size??
Phil.

Ross,
Thanks. I had thought of this – I’m only aware of Corsairs and Hellcats at Macmerry, and its certainly not from a Corsair. I still need to check, but I’m not sure about the Hellcat either. Nonetheless, thansk for the suggestion – if you know of any other types that were there, I’ll certainly see what I can find out.

Hi Ian,
I would suggest rather than types operated in the area to look at types repaired at MacMerry.
My father served his time there and described a significant number of American/FAA types that were repaired then dragged across the road for run up.
Could be that the screens are left over stores from when the facility closed in the 1950s.
Regards
Ross

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I can’t be certain without measurements, but I’m slightly sceptical about the possibilities you’ve suggested. This has come from a yard in East Lothian and there are another dozen or two there, so I assume (perhaps wrongly) that it is from a type that was operated in the area in reasonably large numbers. Whilst it could be either of the suggestions already made, it would seem strange if loads of B25 or Shackleton gunner’s armoured glass panels had ended up there.
Thanks very much for the suggestions but in view of the above, are there any more possibilities?

Mystery glass panel
How about the screen from a Shackleton front gunner’s position?
Anon.

Looks like B25 tail glass
