Like the one previously started by SOC, here is a nice thread for all of you (and me!) to blow off a bit of steam, and shout out to the world that they should stop repeating this-or-that stupid myth/mistake/like for once and for all. Or else…. well, you get the point.
Starting off:
The magazine Combat Aircraft did a pretty nice review of the new Kiev-Zhulyani museum in Ukraine in their March 2005 issue, and thought it would be nice to add a bit of Ukrainian flavour to that otherwise perfectly nice article by also putting in two colour profiles of Ukrainian aircraft.
…..drums start rolling, rant mode on…..
One of the aircraft profiles they have is that of a Ukrainian Su-24MP FENCER-F, the EW variant of the Fencer. While it was obviously not a problem to have a correspondent visiting Ukraine, it was appearantly too difficult to actually check the info they write next to their colour profiles (profiles they were happy to promote as being particularly interesting).
The caption states the Ukrainian Su-24MPs are based at Chortkiv. WRONG!
While the former 11ORAP Fencer-Fs indeed went to Chortkiv to replace the Yak-28PPs there back in 1991, they remained there only for a very short time as by the time Ukraine became independent in January 1992, Chortkiv became the Ukraine’s main Frogfoot base. There are NO Fencers at Chortkiv, and most definately no Su-24MPs.
The Ukrainian Su-24MPs are based at Kolomyya. They have been positively identified there in 1996 already. Can everybody please get that straight from now on?
……rant over, trumpets fade out….
Thank you. Over to you guys.
