LONDON (Reuters) – The country’s biggest holiday firm, MyTravel Group, has announced it will launch a low-cost airline called MyTravelLite.
MyTravel said the new airline will initially operate two 180-seat Airbus 320 aircraft which will fly from Birmingham to five destinations — Alicante, Malaga, Geneva, Paris (Beauvais) and Belfast — from October 1.

sorry…no spilling of beans as of yet…though a little clue which I think is quite catchy would be… “It almost took my breath away!”
It will probably turn out to be nothing and perhaps somthing that happens often and i’ll look stupid!

RE: MyTravel launches budget airline
On the news last night the CEO of My Travel Lite gave reasons for BHX being the base as…
No relative Low cost competition
and…
8 million people within an hours drive of BHX
I don’t have a clue about what goes in and out of Bham, I’ve never looked. With MCT, the only low coster I can think of is Ryanair to DUB. MYTlite aren’t planning to fly there so yes i can see your point. But, perhaps they didnt want to confuse the two operations by basing them both at the same airport (MCT) as MYT are already based there?….
I have flown on Airtours several times before the changeover and yes I flew MYT last week. The only real difference I’ve noticed are the logo and colour changes. I have enjoyed all flights with AIH/MYT. The only thing thats dissapointed me has been that all my flights with them have been on A320s and as much as i love the a/c…a change would be nice!
The old aircraft…yes I can see that too. The service etc… absolutely fine but i have spotted a few technical faults…one was on the way back last week…i nearly had a heart attck when i saw this one! You’ll hear about it soon.
Regards
Ben

Andrew,
Thats fair enough. Its obvious you have had a bad (or a few) bad trips with Airtours ! I have worked for them for 8 1/2 years now and i know what you mean about the a/c being out of date and shoddy. But at the moment a new fleet has been ordered and the junk is on its way out ! So we are told ?
Regards,
Lyndon.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-08-02 AT 09:32Â PM (GMT)]No it wasn’t just one bad flight, It was few:
1994: MD-82 to Tenerife {and b4 I start I know that all of these a/c r now out of service}. At the time the whole of the inside of the a/c was a complete mess, ripped seats and carpets, broken tables, dirty toilets. Had a two hour delay on the home flight, due to engine failure, and the food was terrible.
1998: A320 to Mennorca. Broken seats, if you had been asked to sit in the brace position, the back of the seat would come with you when asked to lean forward, as it was not fixed properly, and when I told the staff on board they said that nothing could be done, and again the food was terrible. This a/c had a one hour delay on the outbound flight due to a problem with the door locking mechanism.
1999: B767 to Gerona. Again broken and ripped seats and ripped carpet too. This a/c was delayed for 3+ hours due to another failure of the door locking mechanism, which caused us to loose our slot to take off.
2001: B757 to Cyprus. Broken tables, and ripped carpet… I mean ripped carpet can be very dangerous. Toilets were an absoulute disgrace, I mean i wouldn’t let my worst enemy use them. YUCK. And this a/c had a one and half hour delay on the home flight because a problem in the cockpit.
This sort of thing, other people who I know have told me too, that Airtours a/c seem to be falling to bits.
The only reason we travel with Airtours is the fact that the hotels and the non a/c related part of the company are alright.
And I know that this is only eight of the millions of flights Airtours have done over the years, but still it still puts a bad image forward, I think so anyway, but people have their own opinions.
Cheers. 🙂

AIR-TWO-BOB is the nickname for Air 2000.As for any change from Airtours to MyTravel it is the same airline with the same a/c and the same people. You must have had a bad flight ? What went wrong ?

RE: MyTravel launches budget airline
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-08-02 AT 09:12Â PM (GMT)]Benair… are My Travel any different to Airtours then, because i found Airtours to be quite a poor airline, What with broken seats and folding tables in the cabin, along with rude staff, and they never seemed to be on time, because the a/c always seemed to have a problem one way or another. I traveled with Airtours many times and just found them to be not as good as other chater airlines, such as Britannia.
I have heard many people who have traveled with Airtours use the expresion “AIR-TWO-BOB”, due to the fact that they think the same as me, that it is a poor service.
Have they changed in any way now then?
Did you travel with My Travel when you went abroad last, if so I would love to know what they are like since the change of name, like do they offer a better quality of in-flight service etc.
Thanx. 😉

RE: MyTravel launches budget airline
And the fact that My Travel are such a fantastic airline will help to give good brand identification for the new airline…People will associate the two!

RE: MyTravel launches budget airline
What you have to remember is MyTravel has only just changed the c/s.Only 3 aircraft support the full colours at present. To keep costs down when the lo cost airline starts all it needs is the lite sticker on the side.If the venture fails then all they do is pull the sticker off to avoid expensive re-paints and having the aircraft out of action for a few days which would cost a fortune.

RE: MyTravel launches budget airline
They also plan to start another base at Glasgow Prestwick. I wonder if they will fly to Paris Beauvais to compete with Ryanair?
Do you think it will ever come to the point where My Travel will become a completely low cost airline? bmibaby have taken over bmi at East Midlands. It probably could happen becuase some charter airlines are now charging passengers £15 to have a meal on their flights!
Would everyone prefer a few snacks for a couple of pounds or 2 meals for £15?

RE: MyTravel launches budget airline
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-08-02 AT 04:26Â PM (GMT)]The c/s isn’t really any different to the full My Travel c/s is it, except for the fact that they have wacked a huge bill board type word on the side.
How boring it looks.
Usually if an airline starts up a low cost arm they change the c/s, for example when BA started up GO and Air Canada started up all their low cost carriers.
