NA337 finally!

Hi all,

Just got back from a holiday in Canada and a visit to Trenton was on the cards as well. It took a two hours ride by train to get to Orangeville where Deryck Brown was waiting to pick us up. He was the perfect host and the visit was one of the highlights of the holiday:)

Having seen NA337 inside it’s a real tribute to all the volunteers and everyone involved that she is in excellent condition and very complete although work is still ongoing to finish the small details. Some questions I had about how some things were attached were also answered on the spot.

Thanks again for the hospitality Dercyk,

Cheers
Cees

I’ve got the springs – which I will be happy to donate. I dont have any of the rubber bits at the moment.

Derek, Bruce,

The BFP mountings were lying in a cardboard box, the only thing that would be required (provided a BFP is available in Trenton) are the three rubber/suspension mountings that are directly attached to the BFP. And the main instrumentpanel would need replacement as the cutout for the BFP would be needed.

Post some pics of what you have, and lets see what we can do for replacements!

Peter, you are right! Unfortunately the official public viewing deadline was fast approaching and it was anticipated that many vets would want to take what might be their last opportunity to see the interior of a Halifax, so, in some cases, corners were cut!

As the old saying goes.. never a good idea doing the same job twice.. with a bit of research and pleading, they could have gotten a set of mounts I am sure.. oh well..

OK, I discussed it with Guy and he explained that when he built the panel up they did not have any usable anti-vibration mounts for the Blind Flying panel. Rather than hold up the whole thing he built the blind flying instruments into the ‘main’ part of the panel.

I agree that anti-vibration mounts from any other source would be more acceptable than what we have now. It is another one of those jobs that we will get to “one of these days”, since, for insurance reasons, very few members of the public are allowed access to the cockpit of the Halifax.

Correctional work is proceeding on various parts of the interior.

One of the volunteers won’t go into the aircraft without his hard hat as his, now bald, head is covered with scars from the structure that used to support the mid-upper turret!

Sorry don’t know. I will have to ask Guy,(The instrument/cockpit guy.) what he is doing with it.

As I explained to Cees, we each worked on different parts and did not really see the details in the other sections of the aircraft.

As Cees mentioned, detail work is continuing.

Yes, i noticed that too, the mounting brackets are in a cardboard box but they had quite a bit of corrosion on them Perhaps that’s the reason.

Deryck, do you know?

Out of interest, why does the main panel not have a separate Blind Flying Panel – looks odd!

Cees, I realised that you are still a bit jetlagged but it was Belleville you took the train to, not Orangeville.

Deryck,

Absolutely true:o, must be a Dutch thing (orange), I knew the name sounded unfamiliar when I typed it.
I did take one pic of the Arrow, although it is a fantastic replica and just looks to be a real aircraft, I am not into jets, but here is the pic. Hope you like it.

Cheers

Good for you Cees- I enjoy following your own build, and I’m pleased for you that you had this opportunity.

Hi Pagen01

That would be no problem but in fact i didn’t take that many pics of NA337 apart from some detail shots of items that I needed more information about. She is very well represented on the net, that’s why I didn’t make any.
But here are some more.

Hi Cees, it would be great to see more, or ‘walk a round’, pics of the Halifax.
I can appreciate that you may not be able to do this for any reason from yourself or the museum if you can’t though.

Hey Cees, great to see you were able to get to see NA337 while you were over here! I have only seen it twice since she has been complete and it is still impressive when you consider what condition she was in when recovered!

Hi Mike,

Yes, we did go to Downsview to see the museum there and that was impressive as well. Nice to see FM104 (the other bomber) getting much needed attention, the Arrow replica was very impressive as well.
Also for the Labour Day airshow we saw a F4U Corsair landing over Lake Ontario, just in time as a few minutes later torretial rain came down upon us, must have been Hurricane Earl doing it’s bit.
