Name the airfield

I was doing some research and I happened across the attached photo showing a rather nice Canberra 4 ship. My question, what is the identity of the airfield they are flying over? RAF somewhere in the UK is about as far as I can work out. I can write a list of several i know it’s not! With the wealth of knowledge on this forum i’m sure someone can satisfy my curiosity!

The photo is crown copyright as far as i’m aware, as for a timeline, late 50’s would be my guess.

I speak for myself and the others we really enjoy the detective work involved. I don’t always win but there is always someone who has the missing piece of the jigsaw. That is why this forum is so good ,long may it continue.

Outstanding effort everyone! I posted the photo because I liked it and though I’d share it with the forum. I was curious about the Airfield below the 4 ship. Now, thanks to some far keener eyes than mine, you have provided me with the name of the Airfield, a rough date, the serials of the 4 aircraft involved, and even the approximate time of day!! Well done to all, I tip my hat in your direction!

I have a few more that I will either post here or on the similar thread that has recently been resurected.

Although i mistook the airfield (too little time as i was on shifts) i have found a couple of photos of the 231 OCU Canberra’s aerobatic team in a copy of Aircraft Illustrated for July 1979. The pictures were taken in July 1956 and the serials were WH841,WH844,WE195 and WH843. The earlier serials i quoted were for a team in the sixties.

Good spot HC!
Also the sun is very low down, probably catching those hedges, look at the shadows of the Canberra tailplanes against their wings.

Miss-spent (slighty post) youth spending too much time looking at airfields on Google/Flashearth!:) 😀

T-21’s clue was the best.

Definately Cottesmore

Agreed, scene of many of my early airshow visits.
What is odd, is the way that the hedgerows are picked out so clearly, then it dawned on me, it must be the remnants of a good snowfall, which could date the picture to 1957, which for all you old gits like me was a memorable winter of heavy snowfalls.

I was just about to say the same – Cottesmore!! The approaching road from the village, married quarters on the left… and the distinctive airfield – I knew I had seen that same view before…lol
And of course, Cottesmore has it’s own period of Canberra operations…. 😀

It’s Cottesmore – quite difficult to compare to modern shots due to the removal of parts of the two secondary runways and original peri-track – someof which I quickly outlined in red:

Looks like the airfield is being worked on (development or downgraded?)

I’d say at the time the runway was being widened and being extended to its 9000ft. You can also appear to see where the first of the more modern dispersals were going to appear. No evideance of the pan appearing just yet in front of the hangars, but I don’t know when that was added

I’m not so sure. If this was Bassingbourn, then the photo would be orientated West up.

Compare that with today’s satellite photo of the airfield Some things don’t fit. The curvature path of the hangars don’t fit. Proximity of hangars to runway. Where is the road behind the hangars in the modern day photo? etc etc

Hangars look to be “C” type pre-war expansion scheme so should narrow it down.

Interesting one, go with Bassingbourn Canberras.
Looks like the airfield is being worked on (development or downgraded?) and looks like two parallel runways, probably just appearence from works.

I would say the Canberra’s are T.4’s from 231 OCU Bassingbourn which had an aerobatic team of serials WJ637,WH920,WJ714 and WH641/A.

Still working on the location. The main runway looks to be surrounded by FIDO pipes ??
