Whilst over in England Andrewm and I came across this quirky ATC tower when we stopped for some spotting!! Radio Lancashire also interviewed me in the car park!
Any ideas!

I did some research on it –
“Pennine Tower was used as a restaurant but closed to the general public around the late 1980’s/early 1990s. The tower was closed due to Health and Safety reasons. Apparently you need two alternative exits in case of a fire and with just one lift and one staircase coupled with a kitchen the risk is just too high.
Also, drivers found it distracting when lit up at night and thought it was ugly, resembling a UFO.
It opened in 1965, originally owned by Toprank, then Granada and then in 2000 they rebranded into Moto which is what it is today.
The tower is now empty or used as offices.”

And when did the RAF move into Warton, Elgan? It was a BAe factory the last time I looked.
Well thats where my uncle was based, he’s just retired sorry. He wrote Tornado manuals. So sorry yeah just realized its a BAe plant :p
Apologies 🙂

HAHA well done everybody, it is indeed the service station on the M6. Not entirely sure what practical purpose that tower plays as it didnt seem accessible, but we were both quite amazed to see it at first!

Blackpool’s airport tower is slightly smaller than that, and a lot cosier when I visited it last 😀

Yes the traffic is very busy at this particular site, it is quite near Preston I suppose, but not that near.
Ahha, I thought I recognised it. 😉
