If the turboprop had been invented, could a B-17 have flown laden with that one engine? I’m ignoring an argument here that states more power per engine would redefine an airframe design.

They were photoshopped out. The original photo is sure to be somewhere on the internet. It was taken during its days as a testbed as Papa Lima described.

In 1947, 44-85734 was transformed by Boeing into N5111N; a flying test bed for the Pratt & Whitney turbo prop research and development program. From 1949 until 1965 N5111N flew a 1000 hours as a 5 engine 299Z model with a XT34-P turboprop mounted on her nose where the bubble nose use to be.

It’s an unusual design. I assume the T-tail was based on the F28’s tail but as this was a larger aircraft using two rear mounted engines wouldn’t have been possible.

The aircraft, developed from the concept F29, was a 150-pax short/medium range aircraft designed to compete with the 737 and proposed A320. It was launched at the Paris Air Show 1981 but shortly abandoned.

T-tails were more popular back then… For example, the 757 started out as a T-tailed design – check out the lower picture at:

The arrangement was changed to that we know, partially due to pressure from BA because the t-tail wouldn’t fit into various hangars they wanted to use for 757 maintenance.

That’s a weird design. I thought that the T tail was used when the manucfacturer was using tail lounted engines in order to move the tail away from turbulences.
It’s not the case here isn’t it?

Well, I’ve stared long and hard and that looks like fokker tail to me.

Would it be the abandoned MD and Fokker project, the F-29?

Eventualy called the MDF-100.

If memory serves it was to carry around 150 pax.
