Naming of Parts

Good Morning all

We acquired the items in the pictures below last night and would be grateful for any help in identifying them. Apologies if this post is in the wrong place .

I was told the parts came from crash sites in the Pentland Hills just to the east of Edinburgh. I have identified only two carshes in the Pentlands a Ju88 and a Spitfire I.

I think the bullet shaped part in the first picture is the front end of an RWR Receiver from a Buccaneer – I cant find any close up pics to confirm this – can anyone comment? I doubt if a Buccaneer crashed near Edinburgh but very happy to be educated

The second pic shows what to my uninformed eye is part of a wing – any comments?

Many thank forr any forthcomiong comments

Regards
Frank

Thanks Cees,

If this came from a wreck then there is only one B17 that I know of in the Edinburgh area that it could have came from.

I have my doubts that it came from the local area at all other than that B17.

My only other thoughts are that one of the ATC members maybe brought it back from a trip to the Cheviot hills. As most will know there is substantial wreckage all over the place there. Not impossible to find a nice piece of wreck for a display item there now is it.

Any other thoughts guys but a bit of a long shot.

100% procent B17 outer wing spar. I checked today against one we have on show at the museum.

I thought this would be an eloquent discussion of the eponymous poem 😉

{snip}

Thank you, I was just going to look for that. Lovely, isn’t it

Hi guys,

If these parts are from an Edinburgh area wreck and from an edinburgh ATC squadron then there is only 1 B17 wreck that I know of in this area.

Is this part possibly from a Liberator?

I know of a wreck near Edinburgh.

Also the pod. Could this be linked to any other aircraft such as a Javelin etc?

I know of a wreck nearby if that is the case.

The first one is indeed a Pulse Warning & Homing System (RWR) from a Buccaneer.

The spar looks B17 to me.

No matter, here it is anyway.

I. NAMING OF PARTS

To-day we have naming of parts. Yesterday,
We had daily cleaning. And to-morrow morning,
We shall have what to do after firing. But to-day,
To-day we have naming of parts. Japonica
Glistens like coral in all of the neighboring gardens,
And to-day we have naming of parts.

This is the lower sling swivel. And this
Is the upper sling swivel, whose use you will see,
When you are given your slings. And this is the piling swivel,
Which in your case you have not got. The branches
Hold in the gardens their silent, eloquent gestures,
Which in our case we have not got.

This is the safety-catch, which is always released
With an easy flick of the thumb. And please do not let me
See anyone using his finger. You can do it quite easy
If you have any strength in your thumb. The blossoms
Are fragile and motionless, never letting anyone see
Any of them using their finger.

And this you can see is the bolt. The purpose of this
Is to open the breech, as you see. We can slide it
Rapidly backwards and forwards: we call this
Easing the spring. And rapidly backwards and forwards
The early bees are assaulting and fumbling the flowers:
They call it easing the Spring.

They call it easing the Spring: it is perfectly easy
If you have any strength in your thumb: like the bolt,
And the breech, and the cocking-piece, and the point of balance,
Which in our case we have not got; and the almond-blossom
Silent in all of the gardens and the bees going backwards and forwards,
For to-day we have naming of parts.

Afternoon

Whitley Project asked about stamp marks – I had alook last night and still no numbers visible but it has a pretty thick covering of paint on it. So more exploratory work is required and perhaps some minor surgery if iot is from a JU88 or Mk1 spitfire it will become a disaplay item on our Squadron (ATC) wall. we have a Sea Hawk drop tank which we are working on and the spar was to become a training piece for riveting.

The other part is from a Buccaneer which is interesting as none crashed anywhere near the Pentland Hills. Ferranti did use XK487 on trials work out of Turnhouse so maybe it was discarded there. We got these bits from an ATC Squadron I have a cockpit instrument from XK487 which I got from another Edinburgh Squadron.

Hi Frank

The second bit looks a bit like, but not typical for, a bit of Wellington. Are there any part number on those plates?
