Nanton Lancaster Air Museum to Change its Name

Please note that effective May 8, 2010,
the Nanton Lancaster Society Air Museum will operate under the new name of The Bomber Command Museum of Canada.

THE NAME HAS BEEN CHANGED BECAUSE…

– The Nanton Lancaster Society was formed in 1986 and soon afterwards established a small museum that was based on the town’s Lancaster Bomber. Since then, the museum and its collection has grown dramatically, both in size and scope.

– The Lancaster is no longer the only World War II bomber in the museum’s collection and we are actively working towards acquiring others.

– Initially our displays focused on the Lancaster but over the years have evolved to focus on the entire effort that was Bomber Command.

– In 2005, Canada’s Bomber Command Memorial was Dedicated and stands at the entrance to the museum. This Memorial Wall lists 10,659 names and includes all the Canadians who were killed serving with Bomber Command during World War II.

– The museum is clearly of national significance as the only museum in Canada whose primary purpose is to honour those who served with Bomber Command.

PLEASE NOTE THAT:
The “Nanton Lancaster Society” remains as the governing body and all financial and business operations will continue under this name.
Our website will now be found at http://www.bombercommandmuseum.ca.
Web pages and links at http://www.lancastermuseum.ca will continue to function but will be phased out over the next few years.

MAY 8TH SPECIAL EVENT (1:00 pm) TO CELEBRATE THE NEW NAME WILL FEATURE:

Lancaster Merlin Engine Run-ups
Unveiling of new signage on the museum building
Unveiling of new Bomber Command display panels in the museum

Hello Dave.
The Lancaster as well as other aircraft in the collection have been undercover since 1992. The hangar has been expanded twice with the latest addition of a brand new hangar attached to the present one.

A good move Peter. I guess the new name may also help raise its profile and also help with future funding drives, being more national than local-sounding. Do you have, or plane to have, a hangar for the Lancaster?

Nanton Lancaster Air Museum to Change it’s Name

Hello Peter:
Mk.1 reporting in to congratulate you and the dedicated folk down the road in Nanton for transforming old “Bull Moose” into a memorial and museum of both national and world significance. It’s truly amazing how the folk of a small prairie town (supported by a few dedicated non-Nantonites as well) have pulled together to create something so spectacular from such humble beginnings. I look forward to the day (hopefully within the next 6 months) when I can provide you and your members with appropriate and well-deserved fighter cover for your engine run events and other special celebrations. TW

A fine tribute to Canada’s Bomber Boys. Puts the lack of a suitable memorial over here to shame…
