Napier, 1808-2008

Next year marks the 200th anniversary of the founding of what became D. Napier & Son. Are there any Napier-powered aircraft that are still flying or airworthy?

Although no longer Napier powered, former world altitude holder Napier Scorpion Canberra WK163 is still very much in existance at Coventry although waiting for a new Avon engine at the moment.

There have been rumblings about the net talking of Kermit Week’s Napier powered Tempest rebuild in the works, but how close that is??? That is the BIG question. I’m not holding my breath! Anyone know what stage that project is at?

And at Mallory in August – the inscription above the exhausts says it all!

….And this glorious beast still races regularly today, a perfect cross-over between wings and wheels, with a 24-litre Napier Lion aero engine, mounted in a vintage Bentley chassis.

And as proved at Goodwood in September, it comes in handy for barbeques too. Yum!:D

Gordon Bennett! Not an aircraft, but three Napiers were the first cars wear British Racing Green, in the Gordon Bennett race, albeit in a much lighter shade than BRG tends to be nowadays. One of them is in the National Motor Museum
