NASM Garber Shot's

All,

Here’s a new thread with some of my shots from my trip to the NASM’s Garber Facility in June 2002 – Enjoy 🙂

The first batch are of the Horton Ho.IX and her wings

There is certainly something about a dusty collection of rare aircraft that interests us all! Keep posting and thanks- Neil Medcalf

A couple more…

All,

As this thread seems to interest a few folk I’ll post a couple more piccies

1. Skyraider
2. Black Widow
3. B-17D “Swoose” (Couldn’t get a very good piccie of this one due to her size and the conditions of the hanger, i.e. cramped and dark)

JBS may I ask did you see the IL-2 while you were there? Any shots?

The Horton is almost hard to believe, fascinating.

Hamtech,

Unfortunately not, when I was there the tour was only taking in 3 of the hangers out at Garber so I guess I missed a lot of the other “gems” that where tucked away including the Il-2, The Do-335, and the one I really was to see the the Bv-155 but I guess I’ll just have to wait until they are finished and go on display at Dulles

Best Regards,

The NASM He-219 is the sole survivor of that particular breed, does anyone have any recent photographs of that? Also the sole surviving Do-335, also held by NASM…?

Steve,
I do have a couple of shots of the He-219 but this was in 2002 and the rebuild was at a fairly early stage so she doesn’t look much “He-219-like” but here they are anyway

The bottom piccie is a model that was placed beside her to show how she will look when she’s completed – looks great 😀

I understand that the Bertilson Aeromobile hovercraft is at the Garber site. By any chance did you get a photo of it? Thanks in advance
Neil Medcalf

Neil,
No I didn’t get a shot of that, but I did get a shot of this, an Avro VZ-9V Avrocar, circa 1959

Hope its of interest

Indeed it is – just consulted Veteran and Vintage Aircraft (1968) which lists a Me410 at NASM, serialed FE-499. I didn’t realise that one even existed, thought the RAFM Cosford example was the sole survivor. I shall have to indulge in sausage chips and beans tomorrow as penance. 😀

JBS, are you sure that’s a Me410? Looks a bit more like a He219 Uhu to me…? Either way, some great shots there of some fascinating aeroplanes.

These old German planes have an air of no nonsense about them, even in that derelict state.
