RE: National Anthems
Either Land of Hope and Glory or Jerusalem. Failing that, the signature tune to the Archers, it depicts typical Britain and it’s been around almost as long as the other two tunes!

I think Billy connelly’s idea of
the theme music from ‘The Archers’ is a great idea imaging the Olymics with that playing 😉 🙂

Absolutely. Flower of Scotland.
Which other anthem gets sung by the opposing team at Sports events, too (Yes, I’ve seen the South Africans and Australians both sing along at various matches at Murrayfield) 😉

RE: National Anthems
Yep, that’s the one.
The original lyrics have indeed been scrapped, so it’s no longer about the Unbreakable Union of Freeborn Republics (ah, sarcasm, who could live without it }> ). They had some kitsch no-lyrics tune by Glinka during the Yeltsin years, but most Russians hated that since it was awful. In December 2000 Putin has reinstated the Soviet Hymn but with new lyrics by Sergei Mikhailkov. The lyrics are plain boring now, just your average crap about holy Russia, how glorious it should be, yadayada… No more glorious lyrics though.

Arthur,
I agree ,USSR’s one is definitely my favorite. I glad that Poutib`ne decided to use it again after having dropped it for a while.

RE: National Anthems
Ah, the Canadian anthem. Can’t hear it without seeing the image of Terrance, Phillip, Saddam Hussein and Celine Dion – all in South Park style, of course. 😀
The Dutch anthem is good, it pledges allegiance to the Spanish king, it still refers to the Dutch as ‘van Duytschen bloed’ (the name Netherlands actually refers to Nether-Germany, Upper Germany is what has become the country we know today under that name), and both the melody and lyrics are old enough to give it some historical importance. It’s our anthem only since the 1930s though, before that we had two semi-official ones. The other one was “Wien Neerlands bloed door d’aadren vloeit” (Whom has Netherlands blood flowing through yer vessels”) which is thankfully not played anymore except in certain fascist circles.
The most beautiful one? Definately the Soviet Hymn!

And so it should have stayed Canada. If we have to sing about saving a German tourist with a Greek boyfriend, then so should you.
Besides, who would you prefer to send victorious?

RE: National Anthems
Hi gang,
Well we Canucks have our national anthem in two languages. The English version is terrible consisting of..
Oh Canada,
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah*
Oh Canada,
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah
* the blah is basically uninspired drivel.
The French lyrics are a lot better, but that’s no surprise, it was originally written in French.
The tune? Ah, it’s alright.
Before we actually got some balls as a nation we trudged along to the tune of “God Save The Queen/King” while saluting the Union Jack.

Since 9/11, sporting events have added a second song to be sung before/during/after called “God Bless America” which violates our sworn allegence to the concept of Seperation of Church and State. The tune is much easier to sing, but nobody knows all the words.
At least God Save the Queen is short. We sing that same tune with the title “My Country Tis of Thee” but no one knows what that means.

I like the Tzarist Russian National Anthem. It sounds a treat, and i have it sung with Tchaikovskys 1812 overture. What was the name of the Soviet Anthem? I love that

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-12-02 AT 09:17Â AM (GMT)]I do like our national anthem, the Brabaconne (eventhough the Dutch version sucks). Our Flemish Anthem, just like the Marseillaise, is rather cruel and gives a wrong impression towards foreigners who don’t know the country. Therefor I think we should adopt a new one. I hope the times that we have to slaughter the French are over for good. }> 1302
THE BELGIAN ANTHEM
Noble Belgium – for ever a dear land –
We give you our hearts and our arms.
By the pure blood split for you, our Fatherland,
We swear with one cry – You will live!
You will live, always great and beautiful,
And your invicible unity
Will have as your invincible unity
Will have as your immortal emblem –
For King, Justice and Liberty!
Will have as your immortal emblem –
For King, Justice and Liberty!
For King, Justice and Liberty!
For King, Justice and Liberty!
THE FLEMISH
They won’t tame him, the proud Flemish Lion
Even if they threat his freedom, with fettering and shouting
They won’t tame him, as long as one Fleming is still alive
As long as the Lion can claw, as long as he has teeth
Time will devour the cities, no thrones will ever last
The enemy will attack, surrounded by the fear of death
we laugh with his anger: the Flemish Lion is there!
They won’t tame him, as long as one Fleming is still alive
As long as the Lion can claw, as long as he has teeth
As long as the Lion can claw, as long as he has teeth
AND THE EU ANTHEM (Ode to joy)
O brothers, no more these sounds continue!
Let us raise a song of sympathy, of gladness
O joy, let us praise thee!
Praise to Joy, the God-descended
Daughter of Elysium!
Ray of mirth and rapture blended,
Goddess, to thy shrine we come.
By thy magic is united
What stern Custom parted wide,
All mankind are brothers plighted
Where thy gentle wings abide.
Ye to whom the boon is measured,
Friend to be of faithful friend,
Who a wife has won and treasured,
To our strain your voices lend!
Yea, if any hold in keeping
Only one heart all his own,
Let him join us, or else weeping,
Steal from out our midst, unknown.
Draughts of joy, from cup o’erflowing,
Bounteous Nature freely gives
Grace to just and unjust showing,
Blessing everything that lives.
Wine she gave to us and kisses,
Loyal friend on life’s steep road,
E’en the worm can feel life’s blisses,
And the Seraph dwells with God.
Glad as the sun His will sent plying
Through the vast abyss of space.
Brothers run your joyous race,
Hero-like to conquest flying
O ye millions, I embrace ye!
With a kiss for all the world!
Brothers, o’er yon starry sphere
Surely dwells a loving Father.
O ye millions, kneel before Him,
World, dost feel thy Maker near?
Seek Him o’er yon starry sphere,
O’er the stars enthroned, adore Him!
Joy, beautiful spark of the gods,
Daughter of Elysium,
We enter fire imbibed,
Heavenly, thy sanctuary.
Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.
Can you sense the Creator, world?
Seek him above the starry canopy.
Above the stars He must dwell.
Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.
Can you sense the Creator, world?
Seek him above the starry canopy.
Above the stars He must dwell.
Joy, daughter of Elysium
Thy magic reunites those
Whom stern custom has parted;
All men will become brothers
Under thy gentle wing.
Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.
Joy, beautiful spark of Gods!,
Daughter of Elysium,
Joy, beatiful spark of Gods!.

Hey, they could do a popstars thing on TV and everyone could vote for the new anthem that way! Guaranteed radioplay and number 1 status!

Not a lot actually. I rather prefer Land of Hope and Glory but when you look into the wording (What I can remember of it) it doesnt seem to bear much relation to our ‘modern day’ England.
As for a replacement, I dunno. Its got to be catchy, strident, stirring etc etc and meaningfull with lyrics that mean something, but I’m not too sure I can quote a song just at the mo’.
‘There’ll always be an England’ and other such wartime songs spring to mind, but i’m not too keen on a purpose designed one to replace our current one.
Perhaps we oughta get the Barron knights to do a cover version. That’d be bladdy good…teehee.
Dunno mate, I’ll havta think about it !
What about all you other guys / gals out there in the big World Wide Wait who havent come up with their own National Anthem observations ?…come on, there must be loads (I do own up to having the Yugoslavian National Anthem on an old 78 (remember them ?)and before you ask, NO, I have no idea why I brought it !)
Cheers

RE: National Anthems
Hi Hand87,
I confess that I don’t know the words to Rule Brittania, apart from the silly version I posted. My post was facetious. I readily accept that many of the world’s older anthems may refer to flogging some poor bloody neighbour, but the music itself in many cases can be quite emotive.
For example, whilst it’s not an anthem, I find Land of Hope and Glory to be a very evocative and stirring piece of music. I am not aware if there are lyrics to it, I’ve only ever heard it played as a tune. Sir Edwin Elgar wrote it about 1910 and as he got older, he heard it so often that he commented he wished he had never written it. Sure, it’s a piece of music written when Britain was at its absolute height of power, but I don’t think that diminishes the music in its ability to evoke emotion. To me, that is the mark of good music. Whilst God Save the Queen may reek of loyalty and tradition, it is a bloody awful tune, with stupid lyrics.
I honestly believe Britain needs and deserves something better. It would be quite feasible for a composer to write an anthem which still carried the sense of loyalty and devotion to Britain with it, in a more modern and contemporary manner.

RE: National Anthems
Well, I have nothing against God Save The Queen. It stands for something which I respect and swore allegiance to. I Vow To Thee My Country I also think would be a good anthem for us. Rule Brittania or land of Hope and Glory I wouldn’t.
Agreed, the French one is a bit aggressive, but then you must bear in mind the historical aspects of anthems – they are historical things. Take God Save The Queen for example, there is a verse that is always ignored about the English giving the Scots a bloody good kicking. The German Anthem had the first verse banned.
Of course, the Sex Pistols God Save The Queen is superb too.
